ABSTRACT
This research used discourse analysis as the research method. The data
were collected from the utterances of the two main characters, Dave and
Aubrey by (1) downloading the movie, (2) watching the movie, (3) reading the
transcript, (4) note taking and sorting. The researcher used Searle and Austin
theories of Expressive Speech Acts to analyze the data. The analysis was
conducted by (1) identifying the data, (2) coding the data, (3) classifying the
data, and (4) analyzing the data.
The results of this study are presented as follows; (1) the first result is
there are types of expressive speech acts used by Dave and Aubrey. Firstly,
the expressive speech acts of praising 15 times, the expressive speech acts of
apologizing 9 times , the expressive speech acts of regretting and thanking 7
times, the expressive speech acts of forgiving 5 times , the expressive speech
acts of lamenting 4 times , the expressive speech acts of expressing joy 3
times. Lastly, the expressive speech acts of blaming and boasting 2 times. (2)
The second result is the most dominant of expressive speech acts used by
Dave and Aubrey. The expressive speech acts of praising gains the highest
rank. It occurs 15 times. It means that the two main characters often use this
type of expressive speech acts in their utterances. (3) The third result is that all
functions of expressive speech acts used by Dave and Aubrey of The First
Time movie. In this case, they use expressing degrees of certainty, expressing
obligation, expressing ability/inability to do something, expressing
pleasure/happiness, expressing liking, expressing satisfaction, reacting to an
expression of gratitude, offering an apology, accepting an apology, and
expressing regret/sympathy.
