1.0 GENERAL

The purpose of this document is to carry out calculations to provide lightning protection for the
Substation Building, Maintenance Building, Crude Oil Tanks and Produced Water Tanks at the
KEYI Field Production Facility installed under Phase III Upstream Surface Facilities Project.

3.0 INPUT DATA

Refer to the BS 6651:1999, Code of Practice for Protection of Structures against Lightning.

Following clauses / sections of BS 6651:1999 are used for designing the lightning protection
system for the respective installations to comply with the requirement of the last paragraph of
section 16.10 of the Design Basis memorandum, document no. KE3-DBM-PRO-0908-8201.

4.0 LIGHTNING PTOTECTION CALCULATIONS.

4.1 Substation building lightning protection:

For the lightning protection layout of the substation building, refer to the drawing No.
KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6217 and the clauses referenced in the above Table 1.

The substation building lightning protection is achieved by the use of adjacent 60.0M high
communication tower as shown in the Dwg. No. KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6217.

Additional lightning protection is not required for the substation building.

4.1.1 Calculations for the Radius of Protection due to the Communication Tower.

Refer to the Figure A.1 of BS 6651:1999.

Due to the presence of Communication Tower at the substation building, the substation
building is protected by the tower.
As shown in the Figure A.1, the area under the sphere of 60.0M radius is considered protected.
However, due to the 7.0M height of the substation building, the radius of the protected area at
the roof level of the building will be R’ which is calculated by the formula given in the Figure A.1
as shown below.

Radius of the Rolling Sphere = H1 = 60.0 M (150 FT)

Height of building = H2 = 7.0 M (25 FT)

Radius of protected area = R’

at the top of substation
building roof level.
R’ = [H2 (2 x H1 - H2)]½

R’ = [7 (2 x 60 – 7)]½

R’ = 28.124 M

Conclusion: Refer to the Section A-A on drawing no. KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6217. The

substation building is actually 5.053 M inside the zone of protection. The calculated radius of
zone of protection is 28.124 M where as the actual radius (measured on the drawing) at the
roof level of the building is 31.875 M. This is due to the fact that the above formula used in the
calculations gives only approximate value of the radius of zone of protection which is however
on the safer side. Therefore the entire substation building is considered protected from the
lightning due to the presence of the tower.

4.2 Maintenance building lightning protection:

The Maintenance building will be provided with the lightning protection using roof mounted
integral system consisting of air terminals, horizontal and vertical conductors forming a mesh
of approximately 20M X 10M dimensions as per the relevant clauses listed in Table 1 above.

Refer to the Lightning protection layout for the maintenance building, DWG. No.
KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6218.

4.3 Storage Tanks (TK-6501 a/b and TK-6601 A/B).

The storage tanks are inherently protected from lightning strikes due to the following reasons:

• The tanks are made of steel.

• Joints of the metallic plates are welded or bolted.

• All vapour / gas openings are provided with flame arresters.

• The minimum thickness of the Tank shell is 6.0 MM.

• These tanks are bonded to the earthing grid at the bottom level.

In addition, the number of thunder storms in the area where the KEYI FPF plant is installed is
very scarce and hence the risk of lightning strike on these tanks is considered very minimal.

Therefore, the lightning protection to the fuel storage tanks and the produced water skim tanks
is achieved by bonding the tank steel structure to the earth grid at the base of the tanks.

4.4 Lightning Protection Materials

All lightning protection materials shall be in accordance with the Table 4 of BS 6651:1999.
