LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS
1.0 GENERAL
The purpose of this document is to carry out calculations to provide lightning protection for the
Substation Building, Maintenance Building, Crude Oil Tanks and Produced Water Tanks at the
KEYI Field Production Facility installed under Phase III Upstream Surface Facilities Project.
Standard Title
Refer to the BS 6651:1999, Code of Practice for Protection of Structures against Lightning.
Following clauses / sections of BS 6651:1999 are used for designing the lightning protection
system for the respective installations to comply with the requirement of the last paragraph of
section 16.10 of the Design Basis memorandum, document no. KE3-DBM-PRO-0908-8201.
TABLE 1
For the lightning protection layout of the substation building, refer to the drawing No.
KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6217 and the clauses referenced in the above Table 1.
The substation building lightning protection is achieved by the use of adjacent 60.0M high
communication tower as shown in the Dwg. No. KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6217.
4.1.1 Calculations for the Radius of Protection due to the Communication Tower.
R’ = [7 (2 x 60 – 7)]½
R’ = 28.124 M
The Maintenance building will be provided with the lightning protection using roof mounted
integral system consisting of air terminals, horizontal and vertical conductors forming a mesh
of approximately 20M X 10M dimensions as per the relevant clauses listed in Table 1 above.
Refer to the Lightning protection layout for the maintenance building, DWG. No.
KE3-LAY-ELC-0908-6218.
The storage tanks are inherently protected from lightning strikes due to the following reasons:
• These tanks are bonded to the earthing grid at the bottom level.
In addition, the number of thunder storms in the area where the KEYI FPF plant is installed is
very scarce and hence the risk of lightning strike on these tanks is considered very minimal.
Therefore, the lightning protection to the fuel storage tanks and the produced water skim tanks
is achieved by bonding the tank steel structure to the earth grid at the base of the tanks.
All lightning protection materials shall be in accordance with the Table 4 of BS 6651:1999.
