Wangari Maathai(1940-2011) was an

kenya. After studying biology in the U.S.she
returned to her home country to begin a career

Kinkri Devi(30 Jamuary 1925 30 December 2007) was a courageous Dalit

with her motherland and the environment. After fighting powerful,

Medha Patkar
Medha Patkar is a politician and activist working on certain political
and social issues raised by tribals, dalits, farmers, labourers and
women facing injustice in India. Medha Patkar is an Indian social
activist known for her significant contributions to environmental and
social causes. She played a key role in the Narmada Bachao Andolan, a
movement protesting against large dams on the Narmada River. Her
efforts focused on environmental conservation, sustainable
development, and the rights of displaced communities affected by dam
projects.

Vandana Shiva, besides being a physicist, ecologist, activist, editor, and author of
numerous books, is also a tireles defender of the environment. She is the founder of
Navdanya, amovement for biodiversity conservation and farmers' rights. She is also the
founder and director of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural
Resource Policy. Shiva fights for changes in the practice and paradigms of agriculture
and food: "Idon't want to live in aworld where five giant companies control our health
and our food,"

In 1993, she received the Right Livelihood Award, commonly known as the
"Alternative Nobel Prize." Other awards include the Order of the Golden Ark, Global
500 Award of the UN, Earth Day International Award, the Lennon Ono Grant for
Peace, and the Sydney Peace Prize 2010.
In 2003, Time magazine identified Shiva as an "environmental hero," and Asia Week
has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of Asia.

Name: TulsiGowda Born: 1944 State: Karnataka


Tulsi Gowda is an Indian environmentalist from Honnali
village, Ankola taluk in Karnataka state. She has planted
more than 30,000 saplings and looks after the nurseries
of the Forest Department. Her work has been honoured
by the Government of India and other organisations.In
2021, the Government of India awarded her the Padma
Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian award. She is
known as the "Encyclopedia of the Forest" for her ability
torecognise the mother tree of any species of tree.
Gowda has also championed women's rights within her
village. When another Halakki woman was threatened
with a gun after an altercation, Gowda came to her aid
stating that she will"protest fiercely if the perpetrator
of the crime isn't punished.

documentary series "Green Warriors" and "Save Our Tigers.

Dutt has campaigned against the illegal wildlife trade in India, which poses
a significant threat to endangered species. Besides, advocates for
sustainalble practices in various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and
waste managenment. actively engages with local communities and
stakeholders to involve them in conservation efforts. She recognizes the
importance of community participation in environmental initiatives and
works to empower local communities to take ownership of conservation
projects and natural resource management.

Throughout her career, Dutt has received numerous awards and honors
for her outstanding journalism, including recognition from
organizations such as the Indian Federation of United Nations
Associations (IFUNA) and the Sanctuary Wildlife Awards. She has
received the Wildsereen Panda Award, also known as the "Green
Oscar," for her documentary "Vanishing Giants."

THIY AGARAJAN

Swati Thiyagarajan is an Indian conservationist, documentary filmmaker and environmental journalist, based in
Cape Town, South Africa and New Delhi, India. She is a core team member of the Sea Change Project in South
Africa and environmental editor at the Indian television news network NDTV. Thiyagarajan is the recipient of the
Carl Zeiss Award, Earth Heroes Award and two Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards. Her work as the
environmental editor at NDTV has been acclaimed internationally and she has been described as the doyenne of
environmental journalism in India.

In 1997, Thiyagarajan joined the television news network NDTV as a journalist. She states that she proposed the
idea of a series on wildlife, environment, and conservation issues to the network in 2000; her idea was accepted
and she was assigned an all-woman team consisting of a co-anchor, a cameraperson, and an editor.

Thiyagarajan was the production manager for the Netflix film My Octopus Teacher, which featured her husband as
the human subject and his diving experiences with octopuses in the kelp forest of False Bay, off the western shore
of South Africa. The film won the Academy Award for the Best Documentary Feature, the Wildscreen Award
presented by the World Wide Fund for Nature and was the winning nomination at the Jackson Wild Festival for
2020.

Thiyagarajan has become a core team member of the Sea Change Project, a conservation effort founded by Craig
Foster and Ross Frylin.

Sumita Narain is a writer and environmentalist who uses


knowledge for change. She has worked at the center for science
and environmen (CSE), a research and advocacy center based in
New Delhi since 1982 .

She is currently Executive Director of the center, Treasurer of the


society for environmental communications and editor of the bi -
monthly magazine - Down to earth

Achievements - In 2005, she was awarded the PADMA SHRI by the


Indian government. She has also received the world water prize
for her work on rainwater harvesting and for her political influence
in developing paradigms for community water management.
In 2005, she also chaired the Tiger Task Force, at the request of
Prime Minister, to develop a conservation action plan for the
country after the loss of the tigers in Sariska. She was the
member of Prime Ministe council in the climate change as well as
the National Ganga River Basin Authority.

She began her work in early 1980s as a co - researcher with Anil


Agarwal. In 1985 she co edited the state of india's Environment
Report which helped the country understand why india is so
important to the poor.
