02 MY 02 2023 - TAKE HOME ASSIGNMENT 2 FOR CE 0002 YEAR TWO 2022/2023

1. (a). You are an engineer employed by the UDSM in its Estate Directorate to serve as a professional adviser to
the University regarding any construction works within the University. The University of Dar es Salaam has
advertised a tender to build a student hostel to accommodate 1000 students with common facilities and shops
in the ground floor. The hostel building is an 8 storey building. The University being endowed with all experts in
the building sector intends to use “Force Account” as the mode of construction of the same.

i. Advise the university about the methods and techniques of construction, the types of equipment required to
facilitate the construction; (5 MARKS)

ii. Advise the university the sources of some of the materials that are required and how to transport the same to
the construction site. (5 MARKS)

(b). The site of the hostel in Question One above, has soil conditions composed of silt and silt-clay, the depth of
which varies between 2.5 m to 3.5 m at some points.

(i). Advise the Consultants about the design of the building how to capitalize on the soil conditions. (5 MARKS)

(ii). How will the earth spoil from the resulting excavations be handled and used? (5 MARKS)

2. You are a Class One Contractor who knows to make money on the basis of incomplete design drawings or
drawings with insufficient information. However, the Client whom you have just won a contract to build is a
friend of yours and you do not want to break the relationship with him. He (the Client) has given you the BOQ
and the drawings (Architectural and engineering) to go through before you start the construction. In your
review of the drawings and BOQ, you note that a lot of design details in both architectural and engineering
drawings are missing. As such, the BOQ gives lump sum cost figures in many of the undetailed construction
items. The site for construction and your head office is in Kigoma while the consultants are in Dar es Salaam
(architects, engineers and quantity surveyors).

2.(a). What advise should you give to your client? What information do you need most to do the construction
without many variations on site? (5 MARKS)

(b). How do you set out a building on a sloping site? (5 MARKS)

(c). List the architectural and engineering drawings needed for the setting out and construction of a building
stating the use/ purpose of each drawing to the construction team. (5 MARKS)

(d). List equipment’s and tools needed for the successful setting out of a building. (5 MARKS)

3. QUESTION FOUR: (20 MARKS)

(a). In the course of studying CE 0002: Construction Techniques and Site Organization, many issues regarding
construction technology and management were discussed or covered. Explain giving examples the concepts of:

i). Site organization; (5 MARKS)

ii). Site safety and security; (5 MARKS)

iii). Tools and equipment necessary for road works. (5 MARKS)

(b). You are a Class One Contractor and you are competing against other Class One Contractors to secure a job
to build a Hydropower Plant at the Rusumo River in Ngara/Karagwe Districts. Present the “Method Statement”
explaining how you will construct the Dam and the Power Plant, listing the necessary equipment and machinery
that shall be needed for the proper execution of the project. (5 MARKS)
