Introduction

Throughout life, many people have of different sides of the world have experienced, and are still experiencing

deprivation, depression, and being underprivileged. These communities are facing many challenges, a few to name of

which are; financial difficulty, and limited access to education. And it is because of this that most people who are members

of DDU communities are unable to obtain professional jobs with high pay to provide for their families. We, a group of

students, have decided to undertake this study in order to find out more about these communities, and provide the

assistance that they are in need of.

Our group employs a qualitative and quantitative research technique. The survey questionnaire provided with close-

ended questions allowed us to analyze the information that was obtained from respondents in a specific barangay. In

order to read the survey findings, we created a graph from the data obtained, so that we will be able to ascertain the help

that they need in their barangay. Visualizing the data in a form of graph will give the viewer a better understanding the

data presented. With the sense of commitment that our group possesses, we are willing to cooperate with any group, in

order to contribute as much as we can to the barangay that we wish to assist. Prioritizing the voices in need, and ensuring

that they are heard. The analyzed data of the survey will be a crucial instrument in discerning the trends and needs of the

barangay.

We discussed about how getting involved in community activities is important for learning. It helps us identify

problems in our community and meet people who need assistance. Working together with others teaches us to be

responsible citizens. It also helps us appreciate the diversity of cultures in our community, and it prepares us to handle

real life situations effectively. Community immersion as a whole helps you in personal growth and self-transformation. It

also ripens your maturity and perspective towards community involvement. It also helps you to know your values and

different beliefs from other people. Community immersion is a method used in NSTP to help trainees gain a deeper

understanding of various community issues. Through immersion, trainees can better comprehend the realities of deprived

groups. It's a hands-on approach to learn about community organizing.

Community Profile

I. Rationale

The researchers conducted their study at Zone 12E, Carmen, Cagayan De Oro City. With the study being related

to community engagement. This study was conducted in order to support the Deprived, Depressed, and Underprivileged

(DDU) communities. Based on the data collected by the researchers using the Needs Assessment Survey, they can find

out what the community needs via survey questionnaire. The information obtained can help the researchers with

recommending activities that can help the community. This study also helps the researchers become better nation

builders by providing them with information and experience in nation building. Knowing the challenges and problems that

the people face is good experience for nation builders to obtain some insight in the world around them.

The researchers utilized qualitative and quantitative method, collecting and analyzing numerical and non-numerical

data. The study conducted used a descriptive study design in order to comprehend the qualitative method and data

collected. In order to gather the necessary data, the researchers sent out 30 survey questionnaires to the residents of

Zone 12E, Carmen, Cagayan De Oro City. The information gathered was tallied and further analyzed in order to be able

to create solutions to the problems of the community. The survey questionnaire is presented in two parts. The first part

being, the personal information of the respondent. The needs assessment program in the second part, that includes a

five-point Likert scale corresponding to the following questions: Environmental Concerns, Health Concerns,

Entrepreneurship and Livelihood, Recreation and Wellness Program, First Aid and Safety Measures During Disasters and

Calamities, and Literacy and Educational Program. With the goal of 30 respondents, the survey took place on April 12,

2024, Zone 12E, Carmen, Cagayan De Oro City. Because the researchers conducted the survey face to face in, they

were able to fill out all 30 survey questionnaires.

The study conducted is expected to provide recommended solutions to the problems that are faced by the

community. Based from the answers in the Needs Assessment Survey, the researchers aim to cooperate with the

barangay or other groups in order to able to develop a solution to the problems, and strengthen ties to the community, as

well as develop stronger bond and better support to the people of the community.
II. Historical, Cultural, and Social Profile

The today's barangay of Carmen was formerly known as Dinogon and Balabag in pre-Hispanic times. The natives

called the southern hilly regions of Cavayan de Oro Balabag and the vast plain areas of the western part of the region

Digonan because they were heavily covered in Digonan trees at the time. How did Christianity spread? Christianity spread

when the Spanish arrived. Along with the celebration of the fiesta, people were baptized as Christians. The saint was to

be chosen by the populace as their object of devotion. People were terrified when a strong storm struck on July 16, 1916,

because the previous day's intense rains had already flooded their rice fields and caused the Cagayan de Oro River to

overflow, flooding the roads. The people's experience of that heavy storm was terrible.

The Natives went to the priest after the storm telling him how the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel had helped them

during that tragic event. They had prayed to her. Thus, our Lady of the Carmen was declared the patron saint of the

people. Since then, the people have celebrated fiesta in honor of their patron saint on July 16th of each year. There was a

time when the people wanted to move their fiesta to a different date, but they decided against it due to the misfortune that

struck and the harm that day's saint had done to them. As a result, the saint Nuestra Senora del Carmen inspired the

barangay's name, Carmen. Carmen developed into a barrio, but since there were no records, people thought they had

been destroyed in the course of the war. Serving as the first barangay captain for ten years, from 1929 to 1939, was

Antonio Bacas.

Culturally, Carmen reflects the mix of influences that make up Filipino identity. They

celebrate festivals like the Higalaay Festival, honoring the patron saint of Cagayan De Oro, St. Augustine. These events

showcase their diverse culture through lively dances, music, and tasty food. The barangay carmen is a very populated

area with 77,756 people living in it, with 2.1% annual population change. Barangay carmen is a very big barangay and

has a landmass of 7.884 km². Barangay carmen is still growing as of now, and it will continue to grow as time pass by

Barangay Carmen has several social structures like schools, markets, commercial buildings, restaurants, etc. Barangay

Carmen is also filled with entrepreneurs where it has a lot of shops around the place.

This is the first day of our Needs and Assessments survey in Zone 12E, Carmen. We met many depressed,

deprived, and underprivileged people in the area. Despite that, it was a fulfilling experience because we encountered

many good people who are living in the area.

We went deeper into the streets of Zone 12, Carmen, as there were only a few people around, and we still had

many survey questionnaires left. we also went to find some small sari-sari stores owners to interview and distribute

surveys to them.
This is our last day conducting the Needs and Assessment survey in Zone 12E, Carmen. On this day, we, as nation

builders, met new people who are living in the zone. Despite the sunny weather, we had a lot of fun watching children

playing in the streets while conducting the survey.
