Parts & Pieces of Music

Throughout the semester, you will use the terms and concepts below in your reactions to our
weekly listening examples.

Sound - different pitch that we have measured by notes( music symbols for instrument
playing) examples: a harp and a drum very different sounds but both are pitched differently

words to know Timbre(tam-ber).

“Sound” Listening Example: Think of 5 words or phrases that describe the sound of the harp.
What makes this sound unique?

Melody known as the horizontal part of music, also known as a tune. It moves all over the
place from high pitch to low pitch

“Melody” Listening Example: Describe the melody played by the strings in the very beginning
of the piece.

Rhythm is the movement of music in time by pushing music forward


It is the most fundamental element of music and evolves the length notes are played for.

words to know: Beat - a unit of rhythm meter- organizes group beats


this is easy or hard depending on the scenario

“Rhythm” Listening Example: Think of 5 words that describe the nature of the rhythm in this
piece.

Harmony it is the combination of sounds at the same time or known as the vertical aspect of
music
consonant - good sounds that mix or dissonant- bad mix of sound mixed
example a piano if you play two keys that sound good that is consonant if they sound bad its
dissonant

“Harmony” Listening Example: Pay close attention to the harmony in this piece. Do the voices
sound consonant together, dissonant, or both?
