INTRODUCTION

Practicums/Internships are the bridge between academia and the professional

world. They provide students with an opportunity to gain professional skills that will

enhance marketability upon graduation from college. The word internship refers to a

short-term work experience when a student participates in a program of temporary,

supervised work in a particular field in order to gain practical experience. It incorporates

education and professional development and is designed to guide the intern toward a

professional career in a particular organization, field, or sector. The word practicum

refers to a course involving activities emphasizing the practical application of theory,

especially one in which a student gains on-the-job experience in a field of study

(Webster’s New World College Dictionary, 5th Ed.). In an internship or practicum, the

student becomes part of an organization. An organization provides a learning laboratory

where students experience the working world. Through observation and reflection of

what occurs in the organizational setting, the student may discover how academic

interests relate to possible careers, gain meaningful on-the-job experience and training,

and connect classroom theory to real-world practice. Students contribute to the

organization by performing meaningful projects and assignments that are of continuing

value to both parties.

ASTORIA Culinary and Hospitality Institute (Astoria-ACHI) was established for

professionals, non-professionals, as well as hospitality and tourism management

students who wish to enhance and further develop their skills in the service industry.

Established in 2011, ASTORIA Culinary and Hospitality Institute (Astoria-ACHI) aspires

to continually provide its trainees equal opportunities to deepen their potential and

passion, in the hopes of building a better tomorrow in the field of hospitality.

Practicum undergoes online due to COVID-19 pandemic, thus the cooperating agency

Astoria Culinary and Hospitality Institute (ACHI) offers virtual training that the student

interns can apply for their On- The Job Training by attending classes required for the

desired lessons to be tackled by the training teacher by teaching them on how to work

in the reality of industry, and what student interns should expect in the tourism and

hospitality by applying the hotel/resort standards that a company offered.

The Host Training Establishment, Astoria Plaza is the first in the growing number

of properties and outlets belonging to the Astoria Hotels and Resorts brand. Since

welcoming guests in 2001, it has set the standard for urban living by combining the

comfort and space of home with the luxury of a hotel.

Located within the Ortigas Business District, Astoria Plaza stands 35 floors and

has 129 first-class residential suites ready to be your home away from home. Each

room comes fully equipped with an en-suite bathroom, entertainment center,

kitchenette, and WiFi. The property also has various recreational facilities available,

including a gym and pool.

If you're looking to indulge a little on your staycation, the hotel also has two

restaurants for you to try: Café Astoria, where you can delight in a variety of local and

international cuisine, and Minami Saki by Astoria, where you can treat yourself to

authentic Japanese dishes.

OBJECTIVES OF PRACTICUM

General Objective

To enable students to gain relevant experience during the virtual training in the

chosen department.

Specific Objectives

1. To have meaningful work experience in their chosen subject of study.

2. To have opportunity to put what they've learned in class to use and to learn

new things in order to improve.

3. To learn new skills and approaches for performing diverse activities and

STRATEGIES AND METHODS

Pre-On-The-Job Activity
This section discusses the strategies and methods used by the student –trainee

throughout the duration of the Practicum Training. This includes the pre On-the-Job

orientation and actual Webinar Training Activities.

Students must complete all requirements and clearances in the first semester of

their fourth year to be eligible to participate in Practicum. The student-trainees must

complete a certain amount of training hours, and they must also provide certain

documentation, such as parental approval, as required by the institution and the partner

company.

On March 8, 2022, the HM Faculty had a Google Meet discussion with Astoria

Representative Ms. Cherry Lagrande and HM Department student-trainees. The

schedule of the Cooperative Agency's General Orientation and the Agreement on

Alternative Activities were announced to the students-trainees during the meeting.

Before beginning on-the-job training or practicum, students must be orientated.

Dr. Willy Cabelite Jr. has scheduled an orientation for March 24, 2022 at ASU-food

CIT's laboratory. Even during the face-to-face pre-on-the-job training orientation,

students must adhere to the AITF and DOH's health and safety guidelines.

After two years of modular and online classes, the orientation was the first face-

to-face gathering in school, and we are fortunate to have survived the new usual set up

despite the obstacles. The importance of finishing the course and how to adapt to the

dynamic Hospitality and Tourism Industry, proper etiquettes in interacting with other

people, payments, training schedules, and confirmation of the allocated department

were all discussed during the orientation. Dr. Cabelite also offered us a motivational

message that served as an eye opener for the sector.

Orientation by Cooperating Agency

On April 4, 2022, the ACHI General Orientation will take place. During the

orientation, all trainers from the hotel's various departments were introduced. The

organizational structure, as well as payment methods for the practicum fee and the cost

of the practicum courses, are all presented. The trainees were introduced to the ACHI

web portal and shown how to utilize and operate it. It's a website where you may

download and upload student-trainee activities and assessments. There are also

bulletins, reminders, and ratings displayed.

The chosen department's on-the-job training or practicum orientation was held on

April 7, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. Before the first synchronous class, use the Google Meet app.

Module 2 and Module 3 comprise the classes. Some of the class's Dos and Don'ts were

announced, and some reminders were discussed. There is also a list of tasks that must

be completed during the lesson.

RESULT ,OBSERVATION AND LESSON LEARNED

This section present the result ,observation and lesson learned by the trainee in

conducting On-the Job Training through virtual learnings.

On-the-job training is a real work experience that students go through to improve

and further develop their skills by actually doing the job and performing it as a worker to

the company or establishments and contribute to its success. Training is broadly

defined as the transfer of required skills and knowledge, usually from a supervisor, to a

trainee or apprentice through demonstration, observation, and learning. practice.

On-the-job training is one of the best training methods as it is planned, organized

and implemented in the worker's workplace. CTF in general will help me as a student to

increase my productivity and skills. It also helped me become a young professional. It

is a method through which students have the opportunity to apply what they have

learned in school. It also helps us to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by working in

a real work environment. Our College requires such training to be completed within a

specified number of hours as part of the curriculum.

The hotel industry is growing rapidly and in recent decades the industry has

become important in a process of dramatic expansion. It grows locally and globally and

drives its growth in a changing multinational environment. The hospitality industry is one

of the industries with a large role in this industry.

During our 7 weeks of professional training, I learned a lot from our trainor.

Despite the pandemic, I can definitely say that I'm lucky to be one of these trainees. We

perform practical activities such as bed making, preparing equipments, checking guest

rooms, telephone call request from customers and many more. There were times when

I didn't understand the activities, I asked my classmates for help and luckily they taught

me how to do the activities.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, on-the-job training for students pursuing

a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management is still conducted via virtual means.

Although trainees and trainers find it difficult to connect, they complete their required

hours and complete the training. He had a lot of problems with how he could do his

video presentation, connecting when submitting activities, and so on. In this program,

the trainee's strategy and productivity will be evaluated to see if he is doing his best to

complete his activities and if he is being responsible and creative in every task that she

is given. This training taught him to act professionally and confidently to work with

people in an industry someday.

Every session provided by the instructors has the potential to assist each trainee

in pursuing and improving their skills and knowledge in the hotel and restaurant

industry.

Even though he had a lot of challenges during their trainings, he managed to

finish it despite the online learning. He became more focused on completing the

activities that the trainer assigned to them. Finding solutions to any problems arises

during their classes.

Conclusion

Every encounter has lessons to be learned. He gained more confidence to

pursue his dream of becoming a hotelier after completing this program.

This training taught him that success is earned through hard labor. When we are

passionate about something, we can work hard to achieve it. One of his motivations is

to set objectives and achieve them.
