OBJECTIVES

• Explain the roles of safety officers in the conduct of OSH


training.
• Enumerate and discuss the stages of the training cycle.
• Discuss the basic presentation and facilitating skills.
• Prepare a training plan for your company.

AND HEALTH TRAINING

• All workers shall undergo the mandatory workers’ OSH


seminar as prescribed by DOLE which shall be jointly
participated by workers and employers.

• Standardized training module for safety and health


personnel shall be implemented and updated regularly as
necessary.

• The mandatory workers’ OSH seminar may be


conducted by the safety officer of the establishment.

CONTENT OF THE OSH TRAINING
PROGRAM

1. Needs assessment: training should first of all start with a


needs assessment, identifying the problems to be addressed.
2. Setting objectives: training objectives or goals establish the
results that the training should achieve.
3. Selection of content: depending on the objectives, the
selection of the content has to describe as precisely as
possible the information that must be presented to the group.
4. Methods: the final, equally important issue is how to present
the selected content, because this has a big influence on
how the presented material is memorized and put into
practice.

• Unveiling
– Is drama useful or necessary?

• Color
– Know your room and lighting
• Dark room – use light font on dark background
• Bright room – use dark font on light background

• Subliminal messages
– Consider your audience and use carefully

• Purpose
– Complement speaker
– Talk ≠ technical report

• Density
– 7-10 lines/page
– 4-8 words/line
– Test: Project a sample in the room, or in a
room of approximately the same size as will
be used in the real presentation

• Serve audience’s needs, not speaker’s
• Be simple and clear
• Supplement and support…NOT DOMINATE!

• Use Sans Serif fonts (fonts without feet)


– e.g. Arial, Tahoma, Trebuchet, Verdana, etc.

• Titles should be 32-44 pt. font size, BOLD

• Text should be as large as possible


– First level 24-32 pt. font size
– Second level 20-28 pt. font size
– Etc.

• Use color wisely

1. Welcome participants and introduce yourself.

2. Distribute name tags.

3. Ask participants to complete the pre-


assessment. Allow about 10-15 minutes to
complete this task.

4. Collect pre-assessments.

5. Explain your role in this training and your


experience in relation to the training topics.

6. Ask participants to introduce themselves (if


20 participants or less).

7. Present the agenda (handouts).

8. Start the training.


ONCE THE TRAINING IS OVER…

1. Make sure you answer all participants’ questions.


2. Ask participants to complete the Training
Evaluation Form.
3. Ask participants to complete the post-
assessment.
4. Collect surveys and post-assessment forms.
5. Provide your contact information and a follow-up
plan for questions.
6. Thank participants for their time.

all levels of the organization and all stakeholders
(employers, workers, subcontractors, service providers,
clients).

• Good communication is important in the effective


implementation of a company’s OSH program.

• The conduct of OSH trainings and facilitation of OSH


meetings are among the roles of the safety officer.
