Scania DEC2
Industrial & Marine Engines

Scania DEC2
Scania DEC2 Digital Engine Control system (DEC2) is an electronic system that controls the fuel supply to the
engine.
With DEC2 the engine receives the correct supply of fuel in all operational conditions.

DEC2 gives the possibility to reduce exhaust emissions.

An electronic unit controls the functions of the DEC2 system. The control unit receives information from various
sensors on the engine. It processes the information and sends signals to an electronically-controlled governor in
the injection pump.

The DEC2 engine control is designed to operate the BOSCH fuel injection pump and governor on Scania Industrial
and Marine engines.

Possibilities with DEC2

Standard features
The standard features in the DEC2 include fuel control, torque limiting vs. speed, boost pressure and
constant or variable speed governing. Each of these features operates in a manner identical or superior to their
mechanical counterparts in existing mechanical governors.

In addition to providing the features found on today’s injection pumps and mechanical governors,
the DEC2 engine control makes it possible to design an engine to a to a specific installation.

Features such as starter or engine cranking control, temperature sensing, temporary engine power surges (above
100%) and fault detection and correction, provide additional performance advantages not available with the
traditional mechanical governor.

DEC2 is capable of controlling over a wide variety of operating speeds and loads. It can run Isochronous (zero
speed droop), which is due to the computing systems ability to have different settings for different operating
conditions. If necessary a small amount of speed droop can be added to meet existing applications.

In order to have a smooth transition between idle and rated speed, DEC2 system incorporates speed
ramping features. This provides smooth speed changes and helps to minimise over-/undershoot that may occur
during these transitions.

Torque limiting vs. speed is provided as a standard feature in the DEC2. In addition to simple torque limiting,
the DEC2 provides for multiple torque maps that may be automatically/manually selected for different operating
conditions.

Customisation
Additional functions like load sharing and synchronising are not avaliable. Other subsupplier components for
genset control purpose have to be added.

Engine protection
The DEC2 constantly monitors itself and the engine, looking for conditions that may lead to engine damage
If such conditions are detected, DEC2 will take steps to alter its control strategy to ensure acceptable power output,
and at the same time reduce the possibility of damage to the engine. If this is not possible, the system will attempt
to provide only enough power to move the vehicle or vessel to a location more suitable for service.

Only under unusual circumstances, when the engine can not be safely controlled or excess damage may occur,
the engine will be shut down.

Some of the features that DEC2 provides are protection for overspeed, low oil pressure,
high engine temperature, and high air inlet temperature.

DEC2 recognises the engines operating altitude.

Sensing atmospheric pressure upon start-up allows the DEC2 to set maximum power output based on the altitude.

All these features work together to allow maximum power output and at the same time reduce the possibility of
engine damage.

Emission friendly
There are several features within the DEC2 that help to meet strict emission regulations.

Two of the major features DEC2 controls are boost pressure fuel limiting and starting fuel control.
Both of these features help to reduce black smoke on start-up and while running under changing load.

These features are fully adjustable at factory so that maximum engine performance can be achieved while still
meeting emission requirements.

Diagnostics
Diagnostics capabilities are integral to the DEC2 control. The system is able to detect and adjust for a variety of
faults. In addition to adjusting engine correction, the need to determine the problem and allow service personnel
to correct it is also addressed by the DEC2. Through a dedicated electronic link, service personnel are able to
connect test equipment to investigate the cause of most problems.

DEC2 provides sophisticated fault detection and correction. However the operator can correct minor problems
without test equipment.

Detected faults will be displayed on the units LED display, The operator will then know what area to examine.

Mounting
The control unit shall be mounted separate from the engine and “standing up” according to the figure below.
The orientation of the unit is to prevent condensation build-up in the hose for boost pressure, and allows draining
of water that may get inside of DEC2 housing.

The control unit shall be visible without removal from its mounting location.
The unit mounted diagnostics port shall be easy to plug in to.
(COMM/DIAG PORT).

For further information on mounting please refer to installation instructions.

Wiring
Standard
The quality of wiring is crucial to all electronic systems, also DEC2.

The wiring harness necessary for connection of the engine, DEC2 control unit and interface to the operator
controls, is provided by Scania.

No other harness shall be used for connecting the engine to the control system unless authorised otherwise by
Scania.

Do not connect any other components to the DEC2 harness!

Doing so may cause damage to the engine.

Customisation
The use of on-board communication CAN (Control Area Network) links allows other electronic controls within
an application to monitor and adjust the engine’s operation. This provides a complete vehicle/vessel package.
Some equipment that may communicate with the DEC2 include: transmission controls, electronic operator panel
and genset monitoring equipment.
