CAREER: PLAN B
Career Choice B: Chemical Technologist/Technician
This job is one that can be any company regarding safety so the
opportunities for jobs are endless. Government and stable jobs like
TRANSLink and BCHydro can be applied to.
Working can take place in structured places like offices and schools – so the
lifestyle mirrors one that’s a normal 9-5 job. However, it is possible to work
in outside conditions. I chose this job as the best choice because of the
simplicity of the job, like doing inspections and providing consultation.
The upside of this choice is the pay you can initially start with. According to
WorkBC - the lowest wage per hour is around $25, the median is $32, and
the highest can be $57. A downside to this job is that workers may be
exposed to harmful chemicals that can damage health if not properly
following safety precautions.
Responsibilities may include going to different sites to check for protocols
and testing materials and safety. The job also includes being a consultant for
the planning part in industrial projects.
As mentioned previously, there are government jobs that can be permanent
and a set job once you get in – so long as you have the experience to back it
up.
1. Project management requires proper time management.

POST-SECONDARY OPTION:
When working as a chemical technologist, you get to work in a laboratory. I
particularly enjoyed working with chemicals when I did labs in Chemistry
11 and 12.
This lifestyle of work may make me work in a lab and not the typical office
space. It is similar to Career Plan A, however the job carries out the work
after consulting is approved.
Being a chemical technologist is a great option because it doesn’t require
lots of education for me to get a job. Granted, starting positions may not pay
a lot at first but it will get my foot in the door despite the small amount of
school needed.
An upside of this career is getting into managerial positions (project
manager, supervisor, etc.) through years of experience, these positions can
pay well. However, a downside to taking this career path may be getting
hired by contract lab that will pay significantly lower.
Most jobs you could get in this career require you to stand for long periods
of time and do onsite work like collecting examples for testing. The career
is widely displaced in the manufacturing industry so what you will be using
in terms of instrumentation can vary.
The lowest wage per hour is $18.50, the median being $21.00, and the
highest pay possible reaching $32.69.
