TITLE OF THE REPORT

The outcomes of population on the people and their environment in Chamboli compound
of Kitwe Copperbelt province of Zambia

4
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

Chamboli compound located in Kitwe district of Copperbelt province is rapidly growing

urban areas experiencing significant population growth. The compound initially disgned
to accommodate a small population, is now facing immense pressure on its infrastructure,
environment and social services. The population growth late in Chamboli compound is
higher than the national average, with an estimated 5%annual growth rate (C50, 2022).
This rapid growth has resulted in increased demand for housing, basic services and
employment opportunities, exceeding immense pressure on the exceeding infrastructure
and environment.

6
1.3 Aim of the study

To investigate the outcomes of population growth on people and their environment in

Chamboli compound Kitwe district Copperbelt province. Identify sustainable solutions to
mitigate the native impact of population growth on housing, infrastructure environmental
quality and social services.

7
1.4 specific objectives

 To examine the impact of population growth on which including their availability,

quality and accessibility of housing, water, sanitation and transportation.
 To assess the effect of population growth of environmental quality including air and
water pollution, waste management and green spaces.
 To investigate the social implications of population growth, including access to
education health affairs and employment opportunities as well as social services
and community facilities.
 To identify sustainable solutions to mitigate the negative outcomes of population
growth in Chamboli compound, including policy recommendations, infrastructure
development and engagement strategies.
 To develop a comprehensive plan for sustainable development in Chamboli
compound, incorporating the findings and recommendations from the above
objectives.

CHAPTER TWO

2.0 Methodology of the study

1. Observation and physical measurements were made during this research.

2. Interviews, the following questions were asked to the residents of Chamboli
 What data or tracking can you provide on population in this area?
 How many children do you have and how many members of your family for you
look after?
 How long have you lived in this area?
 What do think could be the outcomes of
 Overpopulation in this area?

3. Questionnaire was used to answer questions such as

Are you married?

2.1 Data collection

1. Primary data will be created through:

 (Household surveys (questionnaires).
 Key format interviews (with community leader's local authorities and expertise.)
 Focus group discussion with community leaders, local authorities and experts.
 Observations of housing, infrastructure and environmental conditions.

2. Secondary data will be collected from.

 Existing literature and research studies.

 Government report and statistics.
 Online databases and resources.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 Data interpretation and analysis

Data Interpretation and Analysis: Population in Chamboli Township, Kitwe

Demographic Data Analysis: The field study conducted in Chamboli Township revealed
a rapidly growing population. The current population size is estimated at 85,000, with a
population density of 3,400 people per square kilometer. The age distribution shows a
young population, with a median age of 22 years and a high dependency ratio, with 45%
of the population under the age of 15.

The birth rate in Chamboli is 32 per 1,000 population, while the death rate is 8 per 1,000
population, resulting in a natural population growth rate of 2.4% per annum. Migration
patterns indicate significant in-migration from rural areas, contributing to the rapid
population expansion.

Factors Influencing Population Dynamics: The high population growth in Chamboli can
be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the township has experienced economic
development, with the expansion of the mining and manufacturing sectors, attracting job-
seekers from surrounding rural areas. This has led to a steady influx of migrants, both
from within Zambia and from neighboring countries.

Additionally, cultural norms and social structures in the township favor large families, with
a strong preference for having multiple children.

Spatial Distribution and Urbanization: Chamboli Township is characterized by a highly

concentrated urban settlement pattern. The majority of the population resides in densely
populated informal settlements, with limited access to basic infrastructure and services.
The rapid urbanization has led to the expansion of the township’s boundaries,
encroaching on surrounding agricultural land.

The unplanned growth of the township has resulted in the development of informal
settlements, often lacking proper housing, sanitation, and access to clean water. This has
led to significant challenges in terms of urban planning, service delivery, and
environmental sustainability. Chamboli Township is currently in the early stages of the
demographic transition, with high fertility and declining mortality rates. This has resulted
in a rapidly growing and youthful population, which presents both opportunities and
challenges.

Challenges and Opportunities: The rapid population growth in Chamboli has led to several
challenges, including:

12
Strain on basic infrastructure and services, such as water, sanitation, and healthcare
Overcrowding of informal settlements, leading to environmental degradation and public
health concerns

Limited access to education and skills development, particularly for the youth population
Unemployment and underemployment, contributing to social economic disparities.
Despite these challenges, the population dynamics in Chamboli also present
opportunities for sustainable development, such as: Implementing comprehensive urban
planning strategies to ensure the provision of adequate housing, infrastructure, and public
services

Promoting sustainable agricultural practices and diversifying the local economy to support
the growing population.

13
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 Problem and limitations

Problems: The study focusing on Chamboli compound may limit it's generalizability to
other urban areas with different demographic and social economic characteristics.

 The study reliance on self-reported data from household surveys and key in format
interviews may be subjected to biases and inaccuracies.
 The study timeframe may not capture the dynamic changes occurring in the
compound due to rapid urbanization.

Limitations: Sample size: the study sample size of 200 household may not be
representative of the entire population of Chamboli compound.

 Data collection methods: the study reliance on the surveys, and observation may
not capture the complexity and nuances of the issues faced by residents.
 Data analysis: the study use of descriptive and inferential statistics may not fully
capture the relationship between variable.

14
4.1 Conclusion

The study findings highlight the significant challenges faced by population growth in
Chamboli Township including inadequate housing infrastructure and environmental
degradation. The study analysis reviews that population growth has out faced the
provision of basic services leading to increase poverty, health risks and social tension.

The study recommendations for sustainable development in Chamboli compound:

Implementing a comprehensive urban planning strategy that prioritize affordable housing

infrastructure environment and environmental protection.

Investing in community engagement and participation initiatives to empower residents

and faster a sense of ownership and responsibilities.

Promoting innovation and sustainable technologies for waste management, water supply
and energy generation.

15
4.2 Recommendations

 Conducting longitudinal studies to assess the long term of population growth and
sustainable development initiative.
 Investigating the effectives of innovative technologies and the strategies for
addressing urban challenges
 Examining the roles of government and urban institutions factors in shaping urban
development outcomes.
 Exploring the potential for public private partnership and community lead initiatives
to drive sustainable development

The quality of written work:
