Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Google was founded in 1998 with the website Google.Com has become such an institution that
in its short existence, it has changed not only the way we process the endless data found online
but also the way we think and talk about the internet. The term Google itself is a creative
spelling of googol, a number equal to 10 to the 100th power or, more colloquially, an
unfathomable number. Googol was coined in the 1930s and is attributed to the nine-year-old
nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner. Soon after Google was created, the
trademarked company name became a popular verb. (Dictionary. Com)

Google Applications for Education (GAFE) is a effective cloud-computing solution that works
regardless of students location, time, or even the kind of device being used (Google
Applications in Education, 2018). It enhances education with free and easy-to-use tools for
learning. These applications proven that as a precious device can enhance teaching and
learning (Fayez et.al 2016) that can foster collaboration, can assess students written works and
overall performance output easily and can provide clear guidance for doing their best work. In
addition, using these Google Applications like Google Classroom, Google Meet and Google
forms will improve learners teamwork, increase competence, save expenses and reduce
environmental effect without sacrificing privacy or security. Mumba et al. (2013) state that
Google Application for Education (GAFE) tools, in particular, allow users to collaborate virtually
on documents, presentations, and tasks in the cloud. GAFE is used to create developmental
websites as an alternative to conventional classrooms.

Academic performance is measured across a variety of subjects. Teachers and education

officials typically measure achievements using classroom performance, graduation rates, and
results from standardized tests. The origins of measuring academic performance in the United
States date back to the 1830s. Education advocates Horace Mann and Samuel Gridley Howe
used standardized tests to evaluate student processes in Boston, Massachusetts. Kansas
school administrator Frederick J. Kelly advanced the idea of standardized testing with the
Kansas Silent Reading Test in 1914. This multiple-choice test was used to decrease grading
time and standardize student evaluations. (Ballotpedia. Org)

Educational technology such as Google Apps for Education can make an important contribution
to the ideal way of adapting educational methods that may enhance the academic performance
of students. Technology can be an effective tool for transforming learning. It can help affirm and
improve relationships between educators and students, reinvent our strategies for learning and
collaboration, shrink long-standing equity and accessibility gaps, and adapt learning
experiences to fulfill the needs of all learners (King Jr. 2017). This system has an intuitive and
user-friendly interface, allowing most users to make a quick and smooth transition to it. Locketz
(2019) developed conclusions: for starters, collaboration motivates school administrators to
learn and use Google Apps for Education. Furthermore, Layton et al. (2017) note that the
abilities, including critiquing others ideas, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, and using
computational strategies, were developed in Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMPs).
Alshihri (2017) discovered that more than one and varied levels of knowledge and specific skills
can have a significant effect on school and educational staff members’ ability to use the benefits
of using Google services and equipment in their professional activities.

Google founded in 1998, has significantly impacted the way we process and think about the
internet. The term Google is creative spelling of googol, a number equal to 10 to the 100th
power. Google Applicationa for Education (GAFE) is a cloud-computing solution that enhances
education with free, easy to use tools for learning. GAFE Tools like Google Classroom, Google
Meet, and Google forms improve teamwork, increase competence, save expenses, and reduce
environmental impact without sacrificing privacy or security. As a researcher, it is important to
gather relevant information for your study. Understanding how Google works can provide
valuable insights for researchers including ideas for how Google can benefit students. By
studying this information, researchers can gain better understanding of the positive impact that
Google has on education.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Google to the academic
performance of General Academic Strand students in Golden minds colleges balagtas

Specifically, the researchers need to answer the following questions

1.Does Google's search engine help General Academic Strand students find relevant
information?

2. Has the use of google tools improved the

Learning experiences of General Academic Strand students?

3. Does Google help a lot to speed up and facilitate the improvement of the academic
performance of General Academic Strand students in Golden Minds Colleges?

Assumption of the study

The researchers believe that this study is effective, and Google is recommendable to students
who struggle with academic performance. Google mission is to organize the world information
and make it universally accessible and useful. That is why Search makes it easy to discover a
broad range of information from a wide variety of sources that can help everyone, especially
students with their academic performance.

Figure.1 The Paradigm of the Study

The first in frame, the input, shows what the researchers what to aim for: Whether Google is
effective in improving the academic performances of the General Academic Strand students in
Golden Minds Colleges, Balagtas. And last the related literature and studies that are relents the
present study, which helped the researchers obtain the data and information needed to
accomplish this research.

The second frame, the process, shows the procedures by which the researchers selected the
respondents, especially the General Academic Strand students in Golden Minds Colleges,
Balagtas. Afterwards is the distribution of questionnaires to the selected respondents. Next is
gathering of data on the General Academic Strand students in Golden Minds Colleges. Most
important is Collecting and analyzing the data through a Likert scale. The researchers will
collect the data from the General Academic Strand students, and the researchers will analyze
the data through a Likert scale. A Likert scale is a type of rating scale often found on survey
forms or questionnaires.

Lastly, the output entails the researchers assessment of the effectiveness of Google on the
academic performance of general academic strand students in Golden Minds Colleges,
Balagtas.

Theoretical Framework

This study anchored on the theory of planned behavior applied to search engines as a learning
tools. Liaw(2004)

The Theory of Planned Behavior Applied to Search Engines as a Learning Tools

This Theory supports this research. According to Shu-Sheng Liaw(2004), search engines have
been developing for helping learners to seek information. This Theory said that search engines
have perceived satisfaction, that search engines as an information retrieval tool, and sharing
search experience and information are three significant factors to affect individual behavioral
intention to use search engines as a learning tool.

This study and the theory are connected because this research focuses on the effectiveness of
Google on the academic performance of General Academic Strand students, while the theory
talks about how effective the search engines are as learning tools. As we all know, Google is a
type of search engine where you can gather information.

When the students are satisfied with needs to gather information in order to grow their
knowledge regarding their academic performance, the students will be gratified because their
knowledge improves and decreases their stress in academic topics.

Significance of the Study

The goal of this research is to determine the effectiveness of using Google on the academic
performance of the students so that it will aid them in improving their academic performance.
The following set of people would benefit from this study:
