For those wanting n recent times, a small number of motorhome
importers (mostly British or European) have
a European
gained themselves something of a niche in the
motorhome backed Australian market. There’s no doubt that some of the

Avan is a good example – a couple of years ago it
surprised everyone by announcing a manufacturing
agreement with German manufacturer Knaus.
Although I was told at the time the long-term
intention is to build the Knaus motorhomes in
Australia, the 2015 Knaus-built Sun Ti 700 LEG
motorhome under review is built in Germany on an
Australian-specced Fiat Ducato cab chassis. This
means buyers wanting a European motorhome get
the best of both worlds – a European motorhome
backed by an Australian manufacturer.
The Sun Ti 700 LEG is based on a Fiat Ducato Multijet
180 and has an external length of 7.5m (24ft 7in). Not
surprisingly, the Sun Ti looks like a typical European

the windows look a bit on the small side, the same
cannot be said for the external storage space, which is
very generous.
For a start, there’s a very large storage bin across the
rear. In Euro-speak, it’s known as a ‘garage’ which, while
not being large enough for a car, will quite easily take a
couple of bikes and probably a set of golf clubs as well.
There is access from both sides – the nearside door
being quite small because of the gas bin above, but the
offside door is of a very good size. Just a small point
of caution here – the Sun Ti has a long overhang so it
might be good to avoid filling the bin with too many
heavy items.
In addition to the garage, there’s another large bin
just behind the driver’s door. It’s very multifunctional,
best described as a service or utilities bin and worth a
paragraph on its own. In it are the house battery, valves
for draining the grey water, fresh water and water
heater, fresh water filler and mains power connection.
Everything is within the bin, except for the actual hose
connections, minimising the issue of having muddy, wet
or dusty handles and connections. In addition, there’s
enough storage space for hoses, power leads and even
a second battery if needed. About the only minus in
all of this is the actual drainage connection, which did
seem to sit quite low.
 BUYING SECOND-HAND

One of the good features about the table, apart from

the reasonable size, is the mounting pole. It’s not only a
sturdy size, but is spring loaded to easily adjust the height
and so that it can be pushed down to form the front bed
area. Above all the front seating and around the cab area
is a variety of overhead lockers, open compartments and
shelf space – not a millimetre of air space is wasted.
The forward-facing seats that form the dinette area
have full lap/sash seatbelts. They also have something
else that had your trusty reviewer puzzled for a while.
Behind the seats is a narrow shelf, which is very useful in
the kitchen. The shelf also has a push button that, when

It has to be said that the German-designed cabinetry
and general decor has a very schmick and sophisticated
(if you can use those two words together) feel about
it. That’s aided, even in daylight, by the discrete
but effective lighting. A slight oddity in the lighting
department is the halogen reading lights for the bed,
everything else is LED! But that’s not to say there
isn’t enough natural light, because there is, helped
considerably by the large Skyview hatch above the
driver’s cab.
For the lounge and dining area, the motorhome-
friendly Ducato cab chassis is used to full effect. Both
cab seats swivel around and directly behind those is an
L-shaped lounge on the offside and a single sideways-
facing lounge on the nearside. Five people could
probably sit around the oval-shaped table without too
much of a problem.

This is a clever idea, which combines a useful kitchen
shelf when parked up and headrests for rear passengers
when driving.
There isn’t much storage under the offside seats,
mostly because that’s where the water and space heater
is located and also the mains power circuit breakers and
the 12V (labelled) fuses. The rest of the space is taken by
the utilities bin underneath.
On the nearside, the single seat between the entry
door and the cab passenger seat isn’t just a seat either. It
has storage space underneath, which is extremely useful
as a shoe locker since it can be reached when standing
outside. The space behind the seat back appears empty
but actually houses a flatscreen TV which can be lifted up
so as to be seen from the seats opposite, including the
swivelled driver’s seat.
In keeping with the shape of the lounge, the
kitchen bench is also L-shaped and has a distinctly
Euro look about it. Fitted into the benchtop are a
two-burner cooktop and a small round washing up
sink but no drainer.
Underneath the benchtop there are three good-sized
drawers and slide-out wire baskets in the cupboard area.
Overhead lockers are fitted into the air space above.
Facing the kitchen bench on the other side is a 190L
fridge with a microwave above. Because the fridge is set
above a floor level cupboard, the microwave is definitely
on the high side.

RISE AND SHINE

The bathroom in the 2015 Sun Ti is a split arrangement
with the shower cubicle on the offside and the toilet
cubicle opposite. The moulded shower cubicle is semi-
rounded and has two half-doors for access and a slightly
recessed moulding for the variable height shower, taps
and shampoo/soap. The floor does have the wheel arch
protrusion, which reduces standing room somewhat and
may be a slight issue for those with big feet.
Across the way, the toilet cubicle comes with the
necessary cassette toilet, as well as a washbasin, vanity
cabinet and mirrors on the wall. It also comes with two
other features – a door that can close off the bedroom/
bathroom area from the rest of the motorhome and an
extendable wall that can be used to increase the internal
space of the bathroom.
Looking at it from the front, the bed has a slightly odd
shape. One of my colleagues described it as being a
bit like a tongue, with its severely chamfered corners.
There’s a good reason for the bed being that shape as it
has to fit with the bathroom cubicles. To accommodate

the garage area underneath, the bed is set fairly high off
the floor, with steps either side for easy access.
Measuring 1.93m (6ft 4in) in length and 1.4m (4ft 7in)
at its widest point, the bed is designed for both night
and day time use. During the day, the mattress can be
pushed back and a very effective back support is formed
for comfortable lounging. At night, it’s laid flat and reverts
to a conventional bed.
This also reveals one of the few weaknesses in this
motorhome’s design. When the bed is extended, the
nearside corner butts up against the bathroom wall
leaving no walking room and the only way out for the
nearside occupant is over the end of the bed. Given
the shape, height and lightweight frame of the bed, this
is not particularly easy and is one of the reasons why,
with this particular overall layout, I think two single beds
might be more user-friendly.
One quirk in the bedroom was the window location
on either side – they are quite small and set quite low.
Several times I went to open the window blind but then
realised it was the white wall I was looking at.
When Fiat brought Ducatos to this country, they
supplied the largest turbodiesel available to the

The 2014 Paramount Studio Streamline is a luxury on-road van offering space and style in an
elegant touring package.

P
aramount’s entry into the top end of
Caravan World’s 2014 Best Aussie Vans line-
up, the Studio Streamline, was interesting
for one notable reason: it was the only non-offroad
caravan in the category.
At 7.63m (24ft 2in) long, the Studio Streamline is
not a short caravan, but the length allows plenty
of layout flexibility. Its weight is also worth pointing
out – the ATM of 3500kg puts it in the range of
only large tow vehicles if fully-loaded, but the Tare
weight of 2780kg either gives you a very large load

A look underneath the Studio reveals an almost
over-engineered SupaGal chassis with 150x50mm
(6x2in) RHS steel main and drawbar rails. Between
the front suspension mounts and where the
drawbar rails meet the chassis, a 100mm (4in)
RHS rail is laminated to the main rails and, behind
that, a 50mm (2in) rail runs all the way to the rear.
All cross section members are 50x50mm (2x2in)
RHS steel. Is the steelwork adequate for an onroad
caravan? I think so!
Although there appears to be pipework running
everywhere under the chassis, it’s all fairly easy to
follow, and the water tanks are mounted either side

 of the suspension mounts. The suspension is the
leaf-spring, load-sharing tandem-axle variety with
shock absorbers fitted to all wheels.
At the sharp end, the drawbar has all the
features you’d expected: ball coupling, handbrake,
jockey wheel and two 9kg gas cylinders. Along
with these items, there’s a mesh rack between
the drawbar rails. For external storage, this van
has both a front boot and a full-width tunnel boot.
While the tunnel boot has nothing in it, the front
boot contains the two 100Ah deep-cycle batteries,

about the batteries is that they are mounted on

a slide-out tray that can also be accessed from a
front nearside bin door – which means no awkward
bending over to get the batteries in and out.
There are quite a few other external features,
such as a slide-out barbecue, hinged picnic table
and an entertainment unit that contains all the
necessary outlets – 240V, 12V, 5V USB and TV
antenna – on the nearside.
POINT OF DIFFERENCE
The feature that first catches the eye when you
step in through the Studio’s rear entry door is the
colour scheme. It has predominantly white walls,
ceiling, and cabinetry framework, which is offset by
darker glossy colours for the doors and drawers,
and the mottled grey upholstery. There’s no doubt
the lighter colours aid the LED lighting, and the
tinted acrylic panels in the overhead locker doors
are good for those who have trouble remembering
what is in the cupboards!
In some ways, the layout is a familiar one – full-
width rear bathroom, nearside dinette, offside
kitchen and front bedroom. But the major point
of difference is the east-west bed in the bedroom
and a front wall dedicated entirely to cupboard and
wardrobe space.
Since this is a bit different to what you’d usually
find in a van, I’ll start there. East-west beds often
suffer from being a bit short. This one isn’t too bad at
1.9x1.52m (6ft 3in x 5ft) and, while that makes things
a bit tight at the base of the bed, there aren’t any

grill, oven and stainless sink/drainer – still leave a
decent amount of benchtop space at the front end
of the kitchen. Under the post-formed benchtop is
a good selection of cupboards and drawers, with
further storage available overhead.
In keeping with the rest of the van, the cafe-style
dinette has been designed with comfort and style
in mind. The seat cushions and backs encourage
sitting back and relaxing, as do the hinged
footrests. Paramount has solved a conundrum of
having footrests and still allowing easy access to
the under-seat storage areas by fitting drawers
that open into the footwell. It’s an effective and
practical arrangement that works well, especially

contrast to the dry and mostly thorny flora of this
arid part of our continent.
Life abounds in this parched landscape, with an
amazing array of bird, mammal and insect life, and
we were reminded of the magnificence of new
life when the owners of Rawnsley Park Station
introduced us to their little orphaned joey. Grown

while travelling with the Bushranger Joey.
This was not my first introduction to this terrific
little hybrid. I followed it across, under, up and
down the challenge of Camper Trailer Australia’s
2015 Camper Trailer of the Year Awards at
Nundooka Station, some 120km north of Broken
Hill, NSW. It came out as a shining example of
Australian design, construction and ingenuity, while
also delivering a high level of comfort for a most
affordable package. The Bushranger Joey is as
surefooted on rocky trails as its namesake, and has
the offroad credibility to help you explore this great
land in confidence and style.
They say, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight,
it’s the size of the fight in the dog” and that is a
most apt sentiment for this little Aussie ripper.
This is an appealing hybrid camper for travelling
nomads who want a compact towing package with

 the simplicity of less than five minutes total set up
time with vehicle disconnected, roof popped and
stabilisers down. And this Joey comes with a bat
wing-style awning, providing an excellent shaded
footprint. You can literally pull up at a roadside stop,
open the back door and jump into the comfy double
bed as quick as snap, crackle, pop. Not only is this
ideal for an overnighter when there are big miles to
travel, but it is also great for a lunch stop, or maybe
even a ‘nanna nap’ to break up the journey.

OFFROAD BOUNTY
The Joey has quite a few surprises in store,
especially considering its compact nature. It’s
built on a strong, full-box galvanised chassis
and features its own Austrack trailing arm shock
absorbed independent leaf suspension that tracks
beautifully on the asphalt. Offroad, it carries

corrugations, craggy ground, rocky inclines and
muddy bogs. The 2in raised suspension and 16in
Hercules Terra Trac all-terrain tyres on attractive
alloy mags allow excellent ground clearance, and
the relatively short wheel base provides very good
manoeuvrability in tight terrain with minimal rear
overhang to reduce bum drag.

At the front, there is a mesh-style stoneguard,
twin 4.5kg gas cylinder mounts, dual jerry can
holders and the spare wheel mount. The entire
base of the tub has checkerplate surrounds and
components for longevity and abrasion resistance,
and the lower section at the front has further wear
padding to reduce stone damage. The body shell
itself has a 3mm Alumabond composite panel
outer surface with 19mm of insulation and 3mm
Tuscan Dawn timber internal panelling, allowing
terrific hot and cold weather comfort, especially
when combined with the Truma Saphir Comfort air-
conditioner/heater.
There is a surprising amount of storage, with
checkerplate toolboxes, pole cabinets and an
enclosure for the twin 100Ah batteries externally,
as well as a large array of cabinetry inside,

 including under-bed storage. There are cooking
options inside and out, with a pull-out Swift two-
burner gas stove and barbecue plate externally and
a Smev two-burner cooktop in the internal kitchen.
The 2014 Joey has hot and cold pressurised
water from the Duoetto 12/240V unit with 10L
capacity, which runs both the internal sink and an
outside shower unit from two 60L poly water tanks
that are tucked neatly away on the underside and

bracket that is visible throughout the whole interior,

including from the east-west bed, which is tucked
into the front of the van. East-west beds can
sometimes feel a bit small, but not in the Joey, so
you can be assured of a good night’s sleep after a
long day on the road.
The internal kitchen is to the right as you enter
and comprises the Smev cooktop, a stainless
steel sink, preparation space, plenty of cabinets
and a Waeco 80L upright compressor fridge that
really showed its worth on our Flinders expedition,
maintaining our sustenance at a satisfying even
temperature – even when the outside temperatures
fluctuated wildly from quite hot during the day to
freezing at night.
While the Bushranger Joey is very compact, it is
far from claustrophobic. There are long, wind-out
windows on either side and additional light is let in
through the rear door panel. All are provided with
appealing black-out curtains. Overhead, there are
zippered windows in the canvas sections of the
hinged pop-top, all fitted with fine mesh flyscreens.

 Understanding trailer brakes and electric brake controllers.
Braking Basics
E
lectric brake controllers (EBCs) are more
necessary than ever, with most vans now
fitted out with electric brakes. There are
different types of EBCs, but to understand them
you will first need to know some trailer brake
basics.

except for single-axle trailers weighing 750kg or
less. For trailers with an ATM of 751kg to 2000kg,
trailer brakes are required on at least one axle; at
2001kg ATM or more, brakes must be fitted on all
axles.
By law, you also need to have self-activating
emergency brakes for trailers weighing more than

2000kg ATM that will stay activated for at least 15
minutes. These are called breakaway brakes and
the purpose of this is to automatically apply the
caravan’s brakes if the van decouples from the
towing vehicle on the move – clearly an important
safety item.
The breakaway brakes are activated by a switch
on the A-frame. The switch energises the system
when a pin in the switch housing is pulled out. The
pin is attached to a small, rubber-encased steel
cable which, in turn, you secure to the tow vehicle,
preferably not on the towbar assembly. These
brakes and how they’re activated is independent of
the EBC.
The brakes used for almost all caravans – whether
drum brakes or disc brakes – are activated
electrically (although some are partly hydraulic, but

common. One example is the Sens-a-Brake system,
which uses the same principle as electric brakes
but relies on an air compressor (triggered by the
EBC) mounted on the van’s A-frame to apply force
to the hydraulic trailer brakes.
The brake system that used to be fitted to almost
all caravans (and still are to European vans and
some camper trailers) are override brakes, either

cable or hydraulic. These are wholly self-contained
on the trailer and do not require any power from
vehicle or van to operate.
These brakes operate when the weight of the
trailer forces against a pushrod behind the coupling
when vehicle brakes are applied. This mechanical
force either forces the pushrod against a lever to
pull a cable, or push fluid into the brake lines, to
activate the brakes.
It’s a simple and durable system, but is not a
very flexible braking device as it’s not remotely
adjustable – it requires a manual method to lock
it, such as a collar, when reversing (otherwise the
force of the vehicle pushing back against the trailer
may activate the brakes). These brakes are not
compatible with load-levelling hitches, either.
I won’t go into too much detail about these basics
here but, needless to say, you need to ensure your
van has brakes and that the brakes are plugged in
(via a seven-pin or 12-pin trailer plug connection).

a few different types, but the main part of a brake
controller kit is usually a small rectangular box that
is commonly fitted on a metal bracket on the lower
steering column panel or leading edge of the lower
dash area of the tow vehicle. A newer design, with
a remote head, can be fitted almost anywhere near
the driver, most often in the place of a vehicle’s
switch blank (if it has any) with the control unit
installed under the dash.
Don’t assume that a brake controller will be
installed just because you’ve bought a vehicle
with a heavy-duty towbar: it is rarely fitted when
a towbar and trailer plug is installed, unless it has
been specifically requested.
While there are a couple of different types of
caravan brakes commonly used, they operate on
similar principles. The brake controller is powered
by the vehicle battery and is activated by pressing
the foot brake in the towing vehicle. The brake
controller is wired into the vehicle brake light
switch circuit, so when the switch gets power to
turn on the brake lights, it also activates the brake
controller.
The brake controller is the brain behind the
activation of the trailer brakes, but its interaction
with the vehicle’s electrics is very simple. When the
brake light switch is activated when you put your

the vehicle brakes have been applied. This type of

control so the driver can activate the caravan’s
brakes independently of the vehicle (usually to
‘stretch out’ the rig, to reduce sway).
The most popular caravan electric controller
is the proportional brake controller, which has a
pendulum within the controller box, which senses
deceleration. This type can vary brake force on the
caravan brakes, based on the amount of braking
force applied. So the more severe the braking force
applied to the vehicle brakes, the higher the force
applied to the sensor and the more current it sends
to the trailer brakes.
The pendulum controller has to be fitted level so
the pendulum can accurately sense the amount of
braking force being applied, which is why it has to
be mounted on a horizontal plane in the vehicle.
A third type of controller is equipped with
accelerometers that measure G-force as the towing
vehicle’s brakes are applied and apportions the
required braking to the caravan brakes accordingly.
