THE ANDEAN CONDOR

Introduction:
very good teacher, today we will talk about
one of the animals that are in danger of
extinction, which is the Andean condor and
we will learn a little more about it.

los Cerros - condor of the Andes)
also simply called condor Its scientific name is
Vultur gryphus and it lives in the mountains of the
Andes Mountains and is a scavenger bird of
prey.
Characteristcsof the andean condor.
The Andean condor is one of the largest
raptor species in the neotropics. The body
length is 120 cm, reaching a wingspan of
300 cm and a weight of around 12 kg. Its
beak is cream-white at the end and black at
the base. It has gray legs and ayellowish
brown iris and it feeds on carrion, which is
why it plays an invaluable role in
ecosystems.
Natural hábitat:
It lives in mountainous terrain. It glides on
air currents, being able to reach more than
8000 m in height. When it glides, it keeps
its wings extended horizontally and the
primaries spread like fingers. It can travel
speeds of up to 50 km/h. Solitary or in
groups. It nests in holes or caves in rocks.
It lays a white egg, measuring
approximately 109.5-118 x 62.8-76.5 mm.
why are they in danger of
extinction?
The andean condor is in critical danger of
extinction basically because of:
- The main threat that affects the Andean condor is
the consumption of toxic baits, an illegal practice
used to control predatory species.
