Note on repairing carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic parts

► Note on repairing carbon-fibre-reinforced

plastic parts
• The notes on repair detailed below apply to the
following carbon-fibre-reinforced parts:
- Tail section 1
- Fuel-tank cover 2
- Top section of fairing 3
- Front-wheel cover 4
- Engine spoiler 5
- Number-plate carrier 6

Z Damage
• Examine and classify the damage:
- Crack 1, damage is visible on both sides, affects the
paint finish and all layers in the carbon-fibre-
reinforced laminate.
- Paint scratch 2, damage is visible on only one side
and is no deeper than the paint finish.
- Scratch 3, damage is visible on only one side but
can extend through several layers of the laminate.
- Delamination (separation of the layers in the
laminate) is not visible. This damage can be identified
only by the manufacturer using thermographic
imaging: delamination cannot be repaired.

Z Repairing the tail section
• Paint scratches in areas A and B of the tail section
can be sanded down and painted out. Take care to
remove only the layer of paint when sanding: do not
sand down into the layers of the laminate itself.
• Cracks and scratches in area A of the tail section
can be sanded down, sealed with epoxy resin, and
painted out. Cracks that are not repaired should be
kept under observation.
• Do not attempt to repair cracks and scratches in
area B of the tail section: replace the tail section.
