Our Philosophy

Gear units – our passion

Since our company was founded in 1913 by the engineer Max Maag, we
have devoted ourselves to manufacturing unique products. Max Maag set
the company’s course with a truly remarkable invention – an addendum-
modified involute gear system. To this day we continue the tradition of build-
ing unique products of uncompromisingly high quality.

Gear units – connecting machines

A gear unit is never a standalone machine. Rather it is used to connect

driven and driving machines. In the process, torques and rotational speeds are
changed and optimally adapted to the given machines. It takes a mechanical
gear unit to accomplish this task with the required precision and reliability.
Gear units are system components, and as such often perform key integrating
functions within the system. We therefore pay particular attention to the
design of the system as a whole. This allows us to create the custom solu-
tions our clients demand. The gearing that is the heart of every MAAG gear
unit must be engineered carefully so that there is always an adequate safety
margin in the event of unforeseeable system operating conditions. Each
gear tooth has a specific contour that varies across its width and profile,
and must be manufactured with the utmost precision. This way we can
ensure that the load-bearing pattern on the gear teeth is absolutely correct
for the applied load.
Reliability and consummate durability – characteristics that have always
been associated with MAAG gear units and that are the reason why we are
one of the leading suppliers to the petrochemical, cement and shipbuilding
industries.

Gear units – making people’s lives better

It’s a good feeling for a plant manager to know that his MAAG gear units
are working reliably around the clock and production can continue smooth-
ly. And cruise ship captains like to know that they can maneuver their ves-
sels with confidence in any situation. Every day we at MAAG make people
happy and continue to live out the philosophy established by our founder:
making good products for good customers.
