Report on a visit to a self- study centre at a local university

INTRODUCTION
This report is intended to outline the advantages and potential problems of having a
self- study centre at a local university, and make recommendations. In order to do this,
I visited a centre and I asked students for their views.
ADVANTAGES
It was generally believed that a self- study centre could have wide- reaching benefits
for both students and teachers. Some students thought that this was a good idea and
the facility helps to attract potential students to the college. Also, it is under-used at
weekends.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
The main concerns that were raised are as follows:
1. Many students still prefer to study in their own rooms.
2. A full- time assistant has to be on duty even if the centre is empty.
3. It cost a lot to set up because of all the computers, etc.
RECOMMENDATIONS
I am concerned that self- study centre may not pay its way at first. However, all things
considered, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. I would therefore recommend
going ahead with the idea of have one in my college.
