Trabajo Práctico N° 3

A – Reading Comprehension: ¨Aspirin ¨.

This widely consumed drug owes its dramatic effectiveness in reducing pain and fever
to a complex function: it moderates the body’s modified defensive responses to a
disease. This ¨drug¨ is consumed all over the world in huge amounts for treating
different types of diseases.
Even with this massive acceptance of aspirin as analgesic (pain mitigator) its exact mode
of acting within the body is not known. Evidently, it does not act by blocking some agent
of disease but moderating some aspects of the body’s defensive response, i.e. fever,
pain, inflammation, etc.
The basic chemical component of Aspirin is Acetylsalicylic Acid and this compound with
its various salts appears in different organic compound in cases where the people are
using them as medicines.
The increasing desire of pharmaceutical manufacturers to find new drugs with the
therapeutic virtues of Aspirin without including its disadvantages is actually being a
powerful stimulus to the studies for determining the way of action of Aspirin in exerting
its effect. It is proper to considerer the body’s responses to disease when these play a
fundamental role in the undertaken aspirin effect studies. In analyzing these responses
their differences are imposing us of lab models when these approximately resemble the
human being disease and its symptoms and also react comparably when drug is
introduced into them.
A simple case shows the use of these labs models. Viz. Fever usually arises during
microbial infections when to invaders liberate minute quantities of certain substances
pyrogens. The injection of 0,5 micrograms of pyrogen for example raises the rabbit rectal
temperature by one or two grades within the first or second hour investigation.
Vocabulary:
ache pain: dolor.
undertaken: prometer, emprender.
viz: a saber.
