Additional Dry-docking questions

1. A ship of 19,200t displacement floating in saltwater. Her LBP is 235m and has a KM of 10.2
m, KG 9.4 m, TPC 32, MCTC 254 tm and is floating at draft of 9.42 m and aft 10.88 m at
fwd and aft perpendiculars respectively. The centre of floatation is 5m abaft amidships,
centre of buoyancy is 3m forward of amidships.
Vessel is to be drydocked.
Calculate her critical GM on taking blocks all over.

Answer: 0.625m

2. A vessel is to be dry docked in a damaged condition. She is floating at drafts of 12.60 m fwd
and 9 .00 m aft, both measured at a perpendicular. It is estimated that she will take the
blocks15 m aft of the forward perpendicular.

Estimated data: KG 8.9m, KM 9 .4m. TPC 21.3 t, MCTC 290 tm, AF 76m, LBP 165m
displacement 19500 tonnes.
a Is it safe to dry dock the vessel in this condition? Support your answer with
calculations.
b Estimate the drafts at the perpendiculars on taking to the blocks fore and aft.

Answer: (a) - 0.18 m (b) 9.95m fwd and aft

3. In Q 2, what will be the drop in the water level required since the vessel initially touches the
block until she rests on the block overall.
Answer: 2.27m

4. LBP 82m, CF 3 m aft of midships, MCTC 78 tm, TPC 16 t, KM 4.6 m KG 4.10. Vessel’s
displacement is 3200 t and at drafts 3.8 m fwd and 4.3 m aft (measured at perpendiculars).
The vessel is to be drydocked.
Calculate,
a The GM at critical instant
b The drafts fore and aft then
c At what drafts will her GM be zero

Answer: (a) 0.352 m (b) 4.004 m (c) 3.851 m
