Lesson Plan: Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Development

Grade: 5

Subject: English Language Arts

Duration: 60 minutes

Objectives:

 Improve reading comprehension skills.

 Expand vocabulary through context.

 Develop writing skills by summarizing a text.

Materials:

 Copies of a short story or an excerpt from a book appropriate for 5th-grade reading level.

 Vocabulary list from the text.

 Whiteboard and markers.

 Notebooks and pencils.

 Worksheet with comprehension questions and vocabulary exercises.

Standards:

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences.

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-

Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Attendance: Welcome students and take attendance.

2. Objective Overview: Briefly explain the lesson objectives.

3. Warm-Up Activity:

 Ask students to share their favorite book and one thing they like about it.

 Write a few vocabulary words from today's reading on the board and ask students if
they know their meanings.

Reading Activity (20 minutes)

1. Introduce the Text:

 Provide a brief summary of the story or excerpt to generate interest.


2. Guided Reading:

 Read the text aloud to the class, modeling good reading practices (e.g., expression,
pacing).

 Stop occasionally to ask predictive and inferential questions to keep students


engaged.

Vocabulary Development (10 minutes)

1. Context Clues:

 Teach students how to use context clues to figure out the meanings of unknown
words.

 Use examples from the text read.

2. Vocabulary List:

 Go over the vocabulary list.

 Have students work in pairs to use each word in a sentence.

Comprehension Questions (10 minutes)

1. Worksheet Activity:

 Distribute worksheets with comprehension questions related to the text.

 Questions should cover key details, inferences, and main ideas.

 Allow students to work individually or in pairs to complete the worksheet.

2. Review Answers:

 Discuss the answers as a class and clarify any misunderstandings.

Writing Activity (10 minutes)

1. Summarizing the Text:

 Instruct students to write a short summary of the text in their notebooks.

 Encourage them to include the main ideas and key details without copying directly
from the text.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

1. Review:

 Recap the key points of the lesson.

 Highlight some student summaries (volunteers can read theirs aloud).

2. Homework Assignment:

 Assign a related homework task, such as writing a paragraph about what they
learned from the story.

3. Closing:
 Answer any remaining questions and remind students of the next class's topic.

Assessment:

 Evaluate student participation during the lesson.

 Review the completed worksheets to assess comprehension.

 Assess the summaries for understanding and the ability to concisely convey the main points
of the text.

Differentiation:

 For Advanced Students: Provide an additional challenging text and higher-level


comprehension questions.

provide simplified texts if necessary.
