CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
ENERGY, in physics the capacity for doing work. It may exist in potential, kinetic, thermal,
electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other various forms. There is, moreover, heat and work—i.e.,
energy in the process of transfer from one body to another. After it has been transferred, energy
is always designated according to its nature. Hence, heat transferred may become thermal energy,
while work done may manifest itself in the form of mechanical energy.
All forms of energy are associated with motion. For example, any given body has kinetic
energy if it is in motion. A tensioned device such as a bow or spring, though at rest, has the
potential for creating motion; it contains potential energy because of its configuration. Similarly,
nuclear energy is potential energy because it results from the configuration of subatomic
particles in the nucleus of an atom.
Energy Conservation: Energy is something that all living organisms need or rely upon, including
human beings and animals. Most of this energy is absorbed by plants in the form of photosynthesis,
which produces our food. The sun provides energy directly or indirectly to all living things,
including plants and animals. Continue reading to know more about different ways of conserving
energy and the need for energy conservation.
Energy comes in many forms, but only electrical energy and thermal energy (fuel) can be saved.
It results in pollution and eradication of natural resources if these types of energy are used in
excess. To conserve energy, one uses less of it. There are many ways to conserve energy – such
as turning off the lights when you leave a room, removing plugged-in appliances when not in use,
and walking rather than driving. The purpose of this article is to introduce you to the principle of
energy conservation.
Energy conservation is the practice of reducing the consumption of energy by living organisms.
Energy is conserved to reduce the cost of consumption and to preserve the limited existing
resources of energy. Energy can be conserved by using energy-efficient devices and othermethods
to consume energy and reduce the use of energy when there is no requirement. We know that
energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form to another.
So, it is important to conserve energy.
There are two types of sources of energy, namely renewable sources of energy and non-renewable
sources of energy. Non-renewable sources of energy include fossil fuels like coal and petroleum.
Many electric power plants use fossil fuels to generate electricity. These are exhaustible sources
of energy that cannot be produced at a faster rate as we need them. They cannot be used endlessly.
The formation of fossil fuels takes millions of years. So, we should conserve these energy sources
for our present and future generations.
Energy conservation is an idea and practice that focuses on saving our natural resources, especially
those resources which are available in a limited amount. Non-renewable sources of energy are
those that are consumed at a rate faster than that at which they are replenished.
These resources are widely used in the production of electricity by many electric power plants
and automobiles. Their availability is limited because they take millions of years to form. If we
do not conserve energy and their resources, then soon they will get depleted. Therefore, it is
advisable to use alternative sources of energy to save non-renewable energy sources and reduce
the consumption of energy if possible. The following are the importance of energy conservation:
• Energy conservation helps in reducing the use of natural resources of energy like fossil fuels.
For example, more amount of coal and petroleum is used to heat waterandgenerate electricity
in thermal power plants. If we save electrical energy, we save our natural resources, which
are consumed in producing electrical energy.
• Energy conservation reduces the waste which is released into the environment. Itreduces
unwanted carbon emissions into the atmosphere. For example, the burning of fossil fuels
produces energy, and in this process, a lot of harmful gases are emittedinto the air. It causes
air pollution. Burning less amount of fuel reduces the unwanted contaminationof the air.
We can state the law of conservation of energy as the energy which can neither be created nor be
destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another. In other words, the total energy is
conserved. Also, we can define energy as the capacity to dowork. From our earlier classes, we
know that there are different kinds of energy existing in our nature. These forms of energy are
heat, chemical, electrical, light, nuclear, geothermal, mechanical, etc.
CHAPTER 2
ENERGY CONSERVATION IMPORTANCE AND TECHNIQUES
`
1.1 We already know how important energy is for survival. Can you imagine living in the
complete absence of it? No, right! And that’s why energy conservation is so important.
Though there are some renewable sources of energy like wind energy, solar energy, and
thermal energy which will be there till the end of time, there are also some sources of
energythat are non-renewable like coal, oil, and natural gas. The non-renewablesource of
energy is that which is available in nature in a limited quantity and cannot be readily
replaced by natural means at a quick enough pace to keep up with consumption. So, that
means if you exhaust it once, it is almost impossible to renew it.
1.2 The second point which makes energy conservation significant is that saving energy
is saving life itself. We must have heard this slogan many times, “save energy, save the
environment.” As an extension to this idea comes the thought save the environment and
saving a life. We all know how it’s through the burning of coal which we produce
electricityand how the burning of coal releases harmful gases into the environment. This
pollutes theair that we all need for survival. Thus, threatening both our environment and
life itself. So,by saving energy we would be able to reduce carbon emissions which will
inturn save bothour environment and human life.
1.3 We know how rising temperatures, heat waves, and drought, all side effects of climate
change are brought in because of the “greenhouse effect.” And this said effect is created
when harmful gases are released into the atmosphere. And as we already discussed the
burning of coal does that. Therefore, energy conservation is a key step toward tackling the
problem of climate change.
Energy conservation is also how we protect our ecosystem. Humans are exploiting nature in every
way possible; climate change is impacting the whole world and, in this scenario, the silent sufferers
are other species. Climate change is contributing to the fastextinction of many animal species and
if you wish to preserve them, you need to start saving energy. There are benefits that you will
experience in the long run if today you contribute to the cause ofenergy conservation. Given below
are some points which will familiarise you with the benefits ofsaving energy:
1. We know that in the process of producing energy, a lot of harmful gasses are emitted which
are harmful to humans if consumed. It leads to several breathing problems like asthma. So,
by energy conservation, you will also be able to create a better living spaceforyourself.
Therefore, enhancing your quality of life.
2. It will help us get back to the natural equilibrium. Climate change will be tackled and
issues like global warming could be brought under control.
3. You can ensure by saving energy that your coming generations will not suffer from the
lack of energy resources.
4. It will reduce your living expenses. The process of energy conservation could indeed be
expensive but once you are done with it, your average cost of energy consumption will be
reduced.
The first and the most important thing to understand is that if you are planning to save energy,
every day counts. So, try to cut down your daily usage of energy-based equipment. Like, turn off
your AC, heater, fans, and light when not in use. Practice the notion of “Eco Hour.” Try to reduce
your carbon footprint and save energy by riding a bicycle when convenient than a car or a bike.
Switch to more sustainable forms of energy like wind energy or solar energy instead of depending
on fossil fuels for the generation of energy. As we know fossil fuels are non-renewable sources
of energy that once depleted cannot be easily recreated. So, if you wish to practice energy
conservation, shift to those energy sources which are abundant in nature.
The basic idea behind energy conservation is to reduce the consumption of energy. So, even if you
cannot reduce the usage of energy-run appliances completely, shift to those which are more energy
efficient. Lightbulbs are used in every house, so instead of using them, shift to LED and CFL
which consume less energy.
1. Install solar panels – If you are looking to conserve energy and are very serious about
it, installing solar panels is the way to go. It will reduce your dependence on other sources
of energy like electricity which as we know is majorly produced through the burning of
coal. Thus, you will end up preserving non-renewable sources of energy likecoal.
2. Use energy-efficient appliances – Today, technology has evolved so much that
everything has a better alternative. So, if you are planning to save energy, it is a
good decision to shift to more energy-efficient appliances which consume less
energy. These appliances are proven to reduce energy consumption from 9 – 25%.
Even though the cost of such appliances is a lot more, in the long run, the benefits
are more like your electricity cost would be less.
ENERGY METER
Definition: The meter which is used for measuring the energy utilized by the electric load is
known as the energy meter. The energy is the total power consumed and utilized by the load
at a particular interval of time. It is used in domestic and industrial AC circuits formeasuring
power consumption. The meter is less expensive and accurate.
The construction of the single-phase energy meter is shown in the figure below.
The energy meter has four main parts. They are the
1. Driving System
2. Moving System
3. Braking System
4. Registering System
A detailed explanation of their parts is written below.
1. Driving System – The electromagnet is the main component of the driving system. It is the
temporary magnet that is excited by the current flow through its coil. The core of the
electromagnet is made up of silicon steel lamination. The driving system has twoelectromagnets.
The upper one is called the shunt electromagnet, and the lower one is called the series
electromagnet.
The series electromagnet is excited by the load current flow through the current coil. The coil of
the shunt electromagnet is directly connected with the supply and hence carries the current
proportional to the shunt voltage. This coil is called the pressure coil.
The center limb of the magnet has a copper band. These bands are adjustable. The main function
of the copper band is to align the flux produced by the shunt magnet in such a way that it is exactly
perpendicular to the supplied voltage.
2. Moving System – The moving system is the aluminum disc mounted on the shaft of the alloy.
The disc is placed in the air gap of the two electromagnets. The eddy current is induced in the disc
because of the change in the magnetic field. This eddy current is cut by the magnetic flux. The
interaction of the flux and the disc induces the deflecting torque.
When the devices consume power, the aluminum disc starts rotating, and after some number of
rotations, the disc displays the unit used by the load. The number of rotations of the disc is
counted at a particular interval of time. The disc measured the power consumption in kilowatt-
hours.
3. Braking system – The permanent magnet is used for reducing the rotation of the aluminum
disc. The aluminum disc induces the eddy current because of its rotation. The eddy current cuts
the magnetic flux of the permanent magnet and hence produces the braking torque.
This braking torque opposes the movement of the disc, thus reducing its speed. The permanent
magnet is adjustable due to which the braking torque is also adjusted by shifting the magnet to
the other radial position.
The rotation of the disc is transmitted to the pointers of the different dials for recording the
different readings. The reading in kWh is obtained by multiplying the number of rotations of the
disc with the meter constant. The figure of the dial is shown below.
The energy meter has an aluminium disc whose rotation determines the power consumption of
the load. The disc is placed between the air gap of the series and the shunt electromagnet. The
shunt magnet has the pressure coil, and the series magnet has the current coil.
The pressure coil creates the magnetic field because of the supply voltage, and the current coil
produces it because of the current.
The field induced by the voltage coil is lagging by 90º on the magnetic field of the current coil
because of which eddy current is induced in the disc. The interaction of the eddy current and the
magnetic field causes torque, which exerts a force on the disc. Thus, the disc starts rotating.
The force on the disc is proportional to the current and voltage of the coil. The permanent
magnet controls Their rotation. The permanent magnet opposes the movement of the disc and
equalizes it on the power consumption. The cyclometer counts the rotation of the disc.
The pressure coil has several turns which makes it more inductive. The reluctance path of their magnetic
circuit is very less because of the small length air gap. The current Ip flows through the pressure coil
because of the supply voltage, and it lags by 90º.
Kerch has five divisions such as BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited), CERC
Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation, GESCOM (Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company),
HESCOM Hubli Electricity Supply Company and MESCOM Mangalore Electricity Supply Company
KERC electricity tariff is the lowest tariff rate in south India as compared with the KSEB, TNEB, Andra
power, etc. The tariff rate for all divisions is the same. Karnataka electricity board single slaps for the
domestic LT supply such as for 0 to 30 units the per-unit cost will be ₹ 3.75/-, from 31 to 100 the per-unit
cost will be ₹ 5.20, from 101 to 200, the per-unit cost will be ₹ 6.75 and above 201 units you must pay ₹
7.8 per unit.
0-30 3.75 30
31-100 5.2 100
Example
Let us calculate, the electricity bill for the unit of 280 kWh.
You must pay ₹ 1927.77/- as your electricity charges to your respective ESCOMs
CHAPTER 3
IDEAS FOR EXPERIMENTS ON CONSERVATION ENERGY
1) Solar oven
Lesson: This is a great way to teach your child about solar energy and introduce him to no-fire
cooking.
1. Close the pizza box. On the lid, make cuts on three sides to create a flap that can belifted.
These cuts should be such that they leave a 1-inch border at the edges of the lid.
2. Take the plastic sheet and using the tape stick it on the underside of the lid using sometape.
This is to trap heat inside the box.
3. Now, line the inside of the box with the aluminium foil. Stick the foil on the undersideof the
flap as well. Your solar oven is ready.
4. Hold the lid open with a pencil standing vertically. You can even ask your little one to hold
it open as you put something in the oven to cook.
5. Put some food inside (on top of the plastic sheet). Nachos topped with grated cheesework
well for this oven.
6. Remove the pencil, close the lid and place the solar oven in a sunny spot to cook food.
7. Check back after a while and see if your food is ready.
8. Once done, remember to recycle the oven and materials you've used.
2) Windmill
Lesson: A popular pick for science fairs, this experiment will teach your child how to harness
the wind to generate power.
1. Using the wood glue, stick four wooden craft sticks (side by side) to make the base of the
windmill.
2. Glue the empty paper towel roll onto the base to create the tower of the windmill.
3. Leave one inch from the top of the paper towel roll and push the nail into the roll to make
a hole. Turn and twist the nail a few times to create a large enough hole to allow the
windmill shaft to spin.
4. Cut the piece of cardboard into a circle of about three inches diameter. Use the glue to stick
this circle to the head of the nail. To make the blades, glue six of the wooden craftsticks on
to this circle.
5. Cut out the bits of cardboard in between the blades.
6. Place the windmill in front of a portable fan. Switch on the fan to check whether the windmill
works. If you don't have a portable fan, you can even spin the blades with your hand.
3) Wind car
Lesson: This is a simple educational toy, which will help your child understand how wind can
be used as a power tool.
1. Decorate the foam board with stickers or paint to make it as colourful as possible.
2. Stick the drinking straws to two ends of the foam board.
3. Now slide the wooden sticks through the straws. Make sure that the sticks protrude from
both ends of the straws.
4. Make holes at the centre of each of the bottle caps so that they can function as the wheels
of the car.
5. Slide the wooden sticks through the holes in the centre of the bottle caps. Apply clay
balls to the end of the sticks to prevent the wheels from falling out.
6. Glue the craft stick to a triangular piece of paper to make a sail like that of a boat. Stick
the sail to the foam board.
7. Get your child to blow at the sail and watch the car as it moves forward, powered
by nothing but air.
