“ Prevent Anemia In Toddlers ”
We often understand anemia as anemia. Clinically, anemia is defined as a blood disorder
characterized by a condition where the number of red blood cells is below normal so that they
do not function properly. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (Hb), which plays a role in
transporting oxygen from the lungs and delivering it to all parts of the body. Anemia
conditions are generally measured using hemoglobin level testing. 2018 Basic Health
Research data shows that 38.5% of toddlers in Indonesia were diagnosed with anemia. That
means, 1 in 3 toddlers in Indonesia suffer from anemia. Globally, around 50-60% of anemia
in toddlers is caused by iron deficiency or commonly called Iron Deficiency Anemia (ADB).
Causes of ADB
 In general, the causes of ADB in toddlers include:
 Lack of consumption of food sources of iron
 Not consuming enough foods that help iron absorption
 Consume foods that inhibit iron absorption
 The presence of accompanying diseases such as malabsorption (impaired absorption
of food in the intestine) and gastrointestinal bleeding.
ADB symptoms
Toddlers who experience IDA tend to show several specific symptoms. Usually, toddlers will
look tired easily, weak, pale, have reduced appetite, are not enthusiastic about playing, are
irritable, dizzy, and have chest palpitations. In fact, in some cases, there are toddlers who
complain of pica, an eating disorder characterized by the behavior of consuming unusual
things such as dirt, paper, soap, etc.
How to Prevent ADB
So, how do we prevent ADB from occurring in toddlers? At least several ways can be done as
follows:
Give your toddler an intake of foods rich in iron, such as: spinach, broccoli, red meat, fish,
beef liver and chicken. Give your toddler an intake of foods that can help absorb iron, such as
foods that contain vitamin C, including oranges, papaya, strawberries and dark green
vegetables. Make sure the baby gets exclusive breast milk. Routinely carry out Hb checks for
toddlers at the nearest health facility. The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI)
recommends carrying out laboratory examinations to detect early iron deficiency at the age of
1 year for term babies, 6-9 months for preterm babies, 2-3 years of age for children, and
children aged 2-3 years. 5 year old child.
