Patient/Employee Transport Safety

PURPOSE

It is the policy of Community Ambulance to preserve the health and safety of its patients and employees.
Patient care and safety are Community Ambulance’s highest priority.

POLICY

Patient Vehicle Safety Restraints:


• Any patient placed on a gurney for transport must be restrained with appropriate seatbelt restraint
devices in accordance with NRS 484D.641.
• Any patient sitting in the patient compartment must be restrained with the appropriate seatbelt
restraint device in accordance with NRS 484.D641.
• Any “3rd rider” and/or family member accompanying a patient sitting in the patient compartment
must be restrained with appropriate seatbelt restraint device in accordance with NRS 484D.495.
• Any “3rd rider” and/or family member accompanying a patient sitting in the front compartment
passenger seat must be restrained with appropriate seatbelt restraint device in accordance with NRS
484D.495.
• Any observer and/or “3rd rider” sitting either in the patient care compartment or front compartment
passenger seat must be restrained with appropriate seatbelt restraint device in accordance with NRS
484D.495.

Ambulance Crew Vehicle Safety Restraints:


• While in the front compartment of the ambulance, the Community Ambulance crew must be
restrained with an appropriate seatbelt restraint device in accordance with NRS 484D.495.
• The Community Ambulance patient attendant must be restrained with appropriate seatbelt restraint
device whenever the patient’s condition permits. The attendant may forego the use of the vehicle
safety restraint device while performing medical procedures.

Equipment Restraint:
• All equipment must be secured using safety belts or on approved shelves with doors secured.
Oxygen tanks must be in proper securing devices.

Child Restraint:
• Children under 6 years: or less than 60 pounds must be restrained in a child safety seat if medical
condition permits.
• If medically necessary, for life-saving interventions, children may be secured with safety belts to the
gurney.

• Field personnel should use the patient’s own child safety seat secured on the bench, jump seat, or
gurney. If the patient does not have a suitable safety seat available, field personnel may use the Pedi-
Mate Child Restraint seat (located on all ambulances) attached to the gurney to secure the child.

Patient Safety/Carrying Devices:


• Field personnel should use their best judgment on how to safely move a patient. Each situation is
different, but all situations require attention to safety for rescuers and the patient.
• The SNHD EMS office in accordance with DOT standards must approve all devices used to move a
patient. Safety restraints on the patient movement devices must be utilized at all times.
