Enculturation is a term referring to the process of acquiring the cultural norms, beliefs and values of
a surrounding cultural environment. It plays a key role in the development of personal identities and
is a constant, life-long process that reinforces an individual’s identity as a member of their culture.
Enculturation can occur through direct tuition such as social interactions with family members, work
colleagues and religious leaders, as well as indirectly through the media. Enculturation may involve
direct instruction, for example a teacher explaining school rules, however, may also be indirect, for
example gaining a better understanding of the values of a workplace when a colleague is praised.
This second, more passive form of enculturation is largely based off social cognitive theory, and
observation and imitation play key roles, as seen in the 2004 study by Odden and Rochat.
