WHAT IS AESTHETIC IN LITERATURE?

Before we go on discussing " aesthetic in literature", we will likely to address the word
"aesthetic". So, aesthetic can be defined as follows;

Aesthetic is a particular theory or conception of beauty or art.

Aesthetic is a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty. According to
wikipedia, "Aesthetic is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and tastes, as
well as the philosophy of art. It examines aesthetic values, often expressed through judgement of
tastes. Aesthetic covers both natural and artificial sources of experiences and how we form a
judgement about those sources".

Aesthetic means a particular taste for what is pleasing to the sense and especially sight. Aesthetic
is the idea that an object is beautiful if perceiving it,is accompanied by aesthetic pleasure.
Aesthetic in literature means the beauty or impact gotten from a piece of writing. It is the
gorgeousness, inspiration or attraction derived from all written work of art (Drama, Prose and
Poetry). It's concerned with beauty, artistic impact,or appearance. Among the examples of beautiful
objects are landscape, moon ,nature and works of art. Beauty is a positive aesthetic value that
contrast with ugliness as it's negative counterpart.

Aesthetics attempts to evaluate the various criteria of beauty which forms part of man's
justification for preferring certain works of art to others. It is proper to say that the basic category
of art ( beauty) was first conceived as an aspect of aesthetics by the 18th Century German
philosophy, Alexander Gottleib Baumgauten who used the term aesthetics to mean " isolate and
focus men's mind on the problem of beauty as a value ".

Aesthetic in literature is the beauty or style or taste in which writings are written creatively. The
form of writing would determine the beauty of a piece of work.Aesthetic in literature is used to
also create an impacting message. A book will only determine its aesthetic if a person enjoys or
hates a novel or a poem. Aesthetic in literature is making references to artistic elements. The
beauty of a piece of work may include Sunset , humans , landscape and even work of art.
Aesthetics is a systematic attempt to understand the nature of beauty which focuses on such
questions as ; what is beauty ? Is it a quality in the objects or in the eyes of the beholder ?

Aesthetic in literature means the beauty or impact gotten from a piece of writing. It is the
gorgeousness, inspiration or attraction derived from all written work of art (Drama, Prose and
Poetry).

Aesthetic of literature is the uniqueness, beauty and artistic of literature among all other
disciplines. It shows the different impact that literature has showed towards the contribution and
development of the society's mind , knowledge and perspective of viewing matters. This means a
photographic practice of capturing visual beauty within an image. Just as the term "beauty" can be
subjective, "aesthetic" can be distinguished as something that is immediately visually pleasing to a
viewer. Aesthetic literature also considers the overall structure and style of the work, aiming to
create a harmonious and pleasing composition. By engaging the reader's senses, emotions, and
intellect, aesthetic literature aims to leave a lasting impression and evoke a deeper appreciation for
the artistry of the written word.

Aesthetic in literature is also the inclusion of references to artistic elements concerned with
expression or appearance within a textual work. Authors or writers include aesthetic concepts in
their works that may help strengthen their purpose for writing or because they're sharing their
thoughts and opinions on their respective aesthetics.

Aesthetic and literature are closely intertwined. Aesthetic refers to the beauty, artistic qualities,
and sensory appeal of something. In the context of literature, aesthetics encompasses the elements
that contribute to the overall artistic experience. This includes language, style, structure, imagery,
symbolism, and themes. Aesthetic considerations in literature enhance its emotional impact,
intellectual engagement, and overall beauty. They shape the way a story is told, the emotions it
evokes, and the deeper meanings it conveys. Aesthetics play a vital role in creating a memorable
and immersive literary experience for readers.

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPH?

Photograph is a word derived from the Greek term *phos* (light) and *graphe* (writing or
drawing) is , by definition, a means of “writing with light “.

Photograph can be considered a visual language. Photos capture an event and that instance that is
frozen in time can communicate a story.

The word photography literally means 'drawing with light', which is derived from the Greek word
'photo', meaning light and 'graph' meaning to draw. Photography is the process of recording an
image - a photograph on light sensitive film or, in the case of digital photography via a digital
electronic or magnetic memory.

Photography, on the other hand, captures images using a camera, freezing moments in time and
offering visual representations of the world.

Photograph Is a picture made using a camera,in which an images is focused on to light-senstive

materials and then made visible and permanent by chemical treatment or stored digitally. It's also a
picture created by projecting an image onto a photosensitive surface such as; chemically treated
plate or film, CCD receptor ,e.t.c.

Photograph is one of the tools used in a literary work of art. It has a great contribution to the
development of literature as it activites and opens the minds of readers. It is as important as the
eye is to the human body system.

If you always consider these three variables, light, subject, and composition. You will have
mastered perhaps the most critical part of photography, and learned how to actually convey an
emotional message with your shots.

In addition; photography or photograph has helped literature arose the interest and enthusiasm of
the society to read and gain more knowledge from several literary works of arts.

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY IN LITERATURE?

Introduction:

Literature and photography, two distinct artforms, have often been seen as separate entities, with
literature focusing on the written word and photography capturing moments in time through
images. Literature and Photography upon each other in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
altered the nature of visual perception in both media. Both art forms confront the problem of
whether to make sense out of the single, abbreviated moment by framing it in isolation or by
expanding it beyond its borders. Verbal and photographic works of art employ synecdoche in
different ways: the two forms depend on different relationship between a whole experience and its
component parts. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the narrative
aesthetic of literature as photographic, where literary works employ vivid visual descriptions,
evoke sensory experiences, and create a sense of immediacy akin to the photographic medium.
This essay aims to delve into the fascinating realm where literature and photography intersect,
examining how the narrative aesthetic of literature can evoke a photographic experience for
readers.

Section 1: Visual Imagery and Descriptive Language

At the heart of the narrative aesthetic of literature as photographic lies the skillful use of visual
imagery and descriptive language. Just as a photograph captures a moment visually, literature can
paint vivid pictures in the reader's mind through carefully crafted descriptions. Authors employ
sensory details, vibrant metaphors, and precise observations to create mental images that evoke
emotions and transport readers to the world they depict. This fusion of words and imagery allows
readers to visualize scenes, characters, and settings, forming mental snapshots akin to a
photograph.

Section 2: Framing and Composition

Photographs often rely on framing and composition techniques to guide the viewer's attention and
convey a specific message or story. Similarly, literature can utilize narrative framing and
compositional choices to shape the reader's perception. Authors employ techniques such as scene
transitions, chapter divisions, and narrative structure to create a deliberate arrangement of events,
characters, and perspectives. These literary devices act as the equivalent of framing a photograph,
directing the reader's focus and shaping the overall narrative composition.

Section 3: Moments Frozen in Time

One of the distinctive qualities of photography is its ability to capture and preserve moments in
time. Literature, too, can encapsulate fleeting moments, freeze them in the narrative, and explore
their nuances. Through precise language and detailed observations, authors can convey the
essence of a moment, suspending it in time for readers to experience. These frozen moments
enable readers to delve into the depth of emotions, engage with characters' thoughts and actions,
and contemplate the significance of the narrative events.

Section 4: Ephemeral Beauty and Visual Poetics

Photography often captures the ephemeral beauty of the world, freezing fleeting moments that
might otherwise be forgotten. Similarly, literature can embody visual poetics, capturing the
transient nature of life, emotions, and experiences. Authors employ lyrical prose, poetic
metaphors, and evocative symbolism to convey the beauty of the ordinary, the melancholy of
passing time, and the ethereal aspects of existence. Through the interplay of language and
imagery, literature can evoke the same emotional impact as a photograph, stirring readers'
imaginations and inviting them to reflect on the ephemeral nature of life.

The impact of Literature and Photography upon each other in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries altered the nature of visual perception in both media. Both art forms confront the
problem of whether to make sense out of the single, abbreviated moment by framing it in isolation
or by expanding it beyond its borders. Verbal and photographic works of art employ synecdoche in
different ways: the two forms depend on different relationship between a whole experience and its
component parts. Photography breaks down the entirety of the multidimensional visual world into
concrete but discontinuous parts, while literature seems organic, synthetic and allusive.
Photography if many of its best practitioners and severest critics are right, places a greater value
on the single, independent fragment of time than literary practic- perhaps until the stylistic
experiment of contemporary fiction has been ready to embrace.

Literature often visualize beautiful descriptions that allows our imagination to picture bright and
colourful images in our minds. These imgaes, such like; photographs, capture moments, emotions
and settings that brings stories to life. Like a photographer creates descriptions and detailed
imagery in writing to create a visual experience for readers or audiences. Authors paints pictures
in the readers or audiences minds, just like a photographer captures a moment through a
photograph, or a photographer skilfully frames a scene and captures it as the perfect moments,
authors uses words and descriptions to create a visual atmosphere within their work through
carefully chosen imagery and sensory details, they paint a picture for readers or audiences to
immerse themselves in.

For example , literature expresses the feelings of the mind which is mostly written out, so as
photography is used to document pictures for one's memories e.g the photos your parents took of
you when u you were a baby.

Therefore literature and photography work hand in hand in which pictures are captured by a good
writer and which can determine the mode of writing, style , figures of speech and even themes
used.

Photography in literature helps to show an illustration of what the work is all about, for example; a
cover photo of a novel will give us an hint of what the novel contains. It also makes us to be
curious of what the book is about as it sometimes keeps us on suspenses.

Photography, on the other hand, captures images using a camera, freezing moments in time and
offering visual representations of the world. Both literature and photography have the power to tell
stories, evoke emotions, and offer unique perspectives. They can complement each other, inspiring
writers and photographers alike. Literature may inspire photographers by providing visual cues or
sparking their imagination, while photography can inspire writers by offering visual inspiration or
capturing moments that can be translated into words. Photography is about making the story come
alive through words, allowing readers and audiences to see and feel the scenes and emotions as if
they were looking at a series of photographers. For example: instead of starting that the
protagonist is sad, a photographic writer might describe the protagonist's tear-streaked face,
slumped shoulders, and an abandoned park bench in the dimly lit background. The use of such
specific details adds depth to the emotions expressed and help readers and audiences visualize the
scene distinctly, almost as though they were looking at a photograph.

In addition, authors also uses photography-inspired techniques to enhance the pace and rhythm of
the story. Just as a photographer varies the depth of field or captures multiple angels, authors
manipulate the narrative focus, switching between close-ups and wide shots.

Photography and literature gave a lot in common, though their relationship is complex, their
histories are marked by significant events, they are considered to belong to aesthetics by both
philosophers of art and literary critics, and they can both be manipulated. One aspect of the
relationship between literature and photography is how the photographic is captured and
thematized in literature or how techniques of photographic vision quietly reshape figurative
language, modes of writing or literary style.

It is clear that throughout it's history , photography(whether this signifies light picture or light
writing) has been defined as how techniques of photographic vision quietly reshape figurative
language modes of writing or literary style. In literature, whether in drama, fiction, non-fiction,or
poetry, photography creates pictures in the minds of the readers. Photography helps develop and
creates inspiration in literature. One aspect of the relationship between literature and photography
is how the photographic is captured and thematized in literature. Here's how literature is reflected
in photography:

* Concept: photography often involves conceptual ideas such as themes that are developed and
explored through the use of imagery. This means that photographers will often consider a concept
or idea and then use composition, lighting, and other elements in the photograph to evoke specific
ideas or emotions.

* Composition: Composition in photography is similar to structure in literature. It’s how the

elements of the image are arranged, and the way they interact with one another to create meaning
or mood. In photography, composition would include things such as framing, balance, and creative
use of angles.

* Use of Light: Just as language enhances mood in literature, the use of light in photography
influences the way the viewer feels about the image. Different lighting techniques such as natural
light, low key, or high key lighting can create different moods in the image.

* Creativity: Just like a literary author, a photographer has to use their creative skills to make their
work stand out. This might involve using a unique angle, experimenting with digital post-
processing, or manipulating the framing and composition of the image to make it unique and
interesting.

* Emotion: Both literature and photography create an emotional response in the viewer. A
photograph can also create a mood or emotion such as joy, sadness, calmness, or tension and
effective use of aesthetics can enhance the emotional response.

Photography in literature, as I like to call it, focuses on creating vivid and cinematic scenes. By
employing detailed descriptions of characters, settings, and events, authors craft a visual landscape
that allows readers to see and experience the story much like they would through a series of
photographs.

For example, instead of simply stating that the protagonist is sad, a photographic writer might
describe the protagonist's tear-streaked face, slumped shoulders, and an abandoned park bench in
the dimly lit background. The use of such specific details adds depth to the emotions expressed
and helps readers visualize the scene distinctly, almost as though they were looking at a
photograph.

In addition to visual depictions, authors also use photography-inspired techniques to enhance the
pace and rhythm of the story. Just as a photographer varies the depth of field or captures multiple
angles, authors manipulate the narrative focus, switching between close-ups and wide shots. This
technique can create a sense of immediacy or establish a panoramic view, allowing readers to
experience and interpret the story from different perspectives.

DISCUSS THE NARRATIVE AESTHETIC OF LITERATURE AS PHOTOGRAPHIC.

Before we go on discussing the above question, let us quickly summarize what we have said about
aesthetic, literature, literature and photograph.

Literature refers to the written and spoken materials of creative imagination i.e Drama, fiction,
non -fiction, poetry and others which are distinguished by their authors to imitates human life.

Aesthetic refers to an idea that an object is beautiful, perceiving by its appearance or artistic
impact.

Photograph is a picture created by projecting an image onto a photosensitive surface to give a

vision.

To begins with, the narrative aesthetic of literature as photographic refers to the narrative form of
literature writings, and how the beautiful appearance of those narrative ideas, creates a visual
picture and imagery in the mind of the readers. Narrative literature as photographic is how the
written works of literature depict the idea that an image or series of image can be used to tell a
story or create a narratives. The aesthetic narrative in literature is the inclusion of references to
artistic elements or expressions within a textual work and this artistic expressions create a visual
image and also tells stories in different ways. A single photographs can depict a scene with a
verisimilitude which pages of written account would still fail to capture. The narrative aesthetic of
literature as photographic refers to a style of writing that employs vivid imagery, descriptive
language, and visual elements to create a detailed and immersive reading experience. This
approach draws inspiration from photography, where capturing a moment in time and conveying it
visually is the primary goal.

To adopt this aesthetic, writers often use precise and evocative language to paint a rich visual
landscape. They focus on sensory details, such as colors, shapes, textures, and lighting, to bring
scenes to life for readers. By leveraging these visual elements, the narrative gains a vividness and
immediacy akin to a photograph.

Using the narrative aesthetic of literature as photographic allows authors to capture fleeting
moments and emotions, much like a camera capturing a specific frame. Just as a photograph
freezes a moment in time, this approach in literature allows the reader to experience and explore a
particular scene, character, or setting in great detail. It is about making the story come alive
through words, allowing readers and audiences to see and feel the scenes and emotions as if they
were looking at a series of photographers. For example: instead of starting that the protagonist is
sad, a photographic writer might describe the protagonist's tear-streaked face, slumped shoulders,
and an abandoned park bench in the dimly lit background. The use of such specific details adds
depth to the emotions expressed and help readers and audiences visualize the scene distinctly,
almost as though they were looking at a photograph. In addition, authors also uses photography-
inspired techniques to enhance the pace and rhythm of the story. Just as a photographer varies the
depth of field or captures multiple angels, authors manipulate the narrative focus, switching
between close-ups and wide shots.

Additionally, the narrative aesthetic of literature as photographic can enhance the emotional
impact of a story. By employing visual language, authors can immerse the reader in the narrative,
creating a sense of presence that evokes a strong emotional response. It allows readers to visualize
the story in their minds, deepening their emotional connection to the characters and their
experiences.

Moreover, this approach can also emphasize the beauty, symbolism, or irony of certain situations,
as photographs often do. The visual description in literature can convey deeper meanings and
evoke a range of emotions beyond what mere exposition can achieve. By aligning with the
principles of photography, writers can capture the essence of a moment, revealing truths or
provoking introspection. Just like a photographer skillfully frames a scene and captures it at the
perfect moment, authors use words and descriptions to create a visual atmosphere within their
works. Through carefully chosen imagery and sensory details, they paint a picture for readers to
immerse themselves in.

Aesthetic literature also refers to written works that prioritize and emphasize their artistic
qualities. It goes beyond merely conveying information or telling a story; it seeks to create a
sensory and emotional experience for the reader. Hence, it's the careful attention to the choice and
arrangement of words, utilizing language that is evocative, expressive, and rich in imagery. It may
employ literary devices such as metaphors, similes, and symbolism to enhance its impact.
Aesthetic literature also considers the overall structure and style of the work, aiming to create a
harmonious and pleasing composition. By engaging the reader's senses, emotions, and intellect,
aesthetic literature aims to leave a lasting impression and evoke a deeper appreciation for the
artistry of the written word.

While this narrative aesthetic is effective in creating a detailed and immersive reading experience,
it is important for writers to strike a balance. Too much focus on descriptive visuals may detract
from the pacing, character development, or thematic exploration. A successful usage of the
photographic aesthetic integrates these visual elements seamlessly into the overall narrative
structure, enhancing the reader's connection to the story without overshadowing other essential
storytelling elements.

Takes for instance, when a reader go to the bookstore to purchase a book to read during her leisure
time, with her first view about any book, the front cover is likely attracted to her at first glance. A
book cover that has a romantic or aesthetic image is likely to pick first over one that it's cover
display war or non-imagery. If you were to read for pleasure, I'm sure you'll pick the one with
aesthetic cover and ignore the other that's unpleasing to the eye. Taking some texts for example, if
you've read "New York,my village" by Uwem Akpan,by looking at the book cover and title, you
already can tell that the book you're about reading is about the Americans in new York, and again,
take "Madagali" by Wale Okediran for another example, the book cover displayed military war
and thus even without reading it,you can also conclude that the novel is a work not relating to
either love or romantic affairs. The juxtaposition here is clear and precise with the help of
photograph. The author put into consideration the necessary things that help convey his narrative
works/thoughts and make the work pleasing and interesting to the minds of the readers. To take
another example of a photo book, the materials, the size, scale of it and the graphic design of it, all
of these features can in subtle way heighten the emotional or intellectual impact of a narrative.

In the novel," the great Gatsby",by Jay Z, the author wrote the story mainly from limited first
person point of view, using the pronoun "I". Nick Carraway, is the narrator who presents a story
of what he sees and hear. Nick Carraway as the narrator pictures Gatsby as a great and worthy
man he had ever meet in his lifetime. "The Great Gatsby" is a sad ending story about a man named
Gatsby. Gatsby's parents were poor farmers who can't afford his needs, So, Gatsby never accepted
them as his parent. He always sees himself as a person destined for a great glory. He started
chasing his destiny at age 16, after he left home. He rescued a ship sailor with his captain, an
alcoholic millionaire named Cody, that was when he sees his opportunity then grabbed it . Gatsby
showed skills and ambitions but unfortunately, after Cody's death, he was cheated of his
inheritance by Cody's family. Gatsby decided to works hard for the lady he love named Daisy, a
young and beautiful looking Lady. Gatsby disappeared for five years and with the skills he learned
From late Cody, he returned as a promising wealthy Man," where did the money comes from?" is
what all of New York wants to know. Unfortunately, after his return as a wealthy man just to find
out that the lady he so much loved had got married to another man. Gatsby built his mansion
across the bay to Daisy's Mansion and hoping everyday to be reunited with his lover once again.
So,with the help of Nick's narratives, the readers were able to capture Gatsby's identity and
everything about the story creates a visual photography in the mind of the readers and also the
story was narrated through the use of flashback techniques.

Using another play for an instance, Elesin Oba: death and the king's horseman by Biyi Bandele.
Based on Wole Soyinka's play is a true life story in Oyo, Nigeria,1943 during the height of world
war II. In the play, Elesin Oba, the king's horseman must commit ritual suicide. The ritual suicide
will be on the night of Thirty days after the king's death. If this ritual is not committed, the king's
spirit will wander the earth and bring harm to his people. It's both that duty and destiny of Elesin
Oba to accompany the king to the after life. In the play, The playwright pictured and portrayed the
Oyo empires in respect to their cultures, beliefs and traditions of the Oyo people. Mr. Pilkings ( a
majistrate officer of the Europeans) finds this custom of the Oyo people awkard and decided to put
a stop to the ongoing death of the Elesin. This cause a chaos and talk within the Oyo people as
they have no power to stop the Europeans From taking the Elesin Oba. The Elesin son had to
commit suicide at first so as to escort the king to the afterlife and for peace to be upon his Oyo
people. One who read the play can easily juxtapose between the Africans and Europeans way of
life. In the play, we can differentiate between the Oyo and Europeans lifestyles; the food they eat,
the way they dress, their beliefs, custom, the way they dance and musical instruments and others
were clearly not compatible in any ways. We can say that " Death and the king's horseman" by
Woke Soyinka is photographic relating it to the aesthetic narratives of the play. Even as a
Nigerian, if one had never visited the Oyo empires during the world war, one can picture the
images of what happened during the 1943 as it gives a vision and crates pictures in the readers
mind. The writing style used by the author creates an inspiration in literature. A reader can also
juxtapose between the Africans and Europeans thought on the importance of the death ritual which
the Elesin Oba must commit of which Mr. Pilkings never makes sense of it in his own
understanding, and this Death is for the peace of The Oyo people.
