Excessive use of social networks in young people.

Social networks are websites or applications where people can interact and communicate with
others, spaces where they can also find fun information and entertainment.

Currently, 85% of the population that has access to the Internet consumes a lot of social
network. This percentage rises to 93% in young people between 16 and 24 years old. Social
networks have become dangerous tools causing great consequences for people who are
connected. Many of the problems caused by social networks are seen in the long term, such as
cyberbullying, anxiety and depression, and even academic problems, and isolation.

For years, studies have been carried out that show that the use of Social Networks has a close
relationship with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental problems. People
who have depression are more vulnerable to using social media too much. There are situations
with which you can identify if a person is having an addiction to social networks, for example,
many mood swings due to comments on posts, they are too worried about being on social
networks, and they become a little irritable if there is not access to these platforms.

The situation is complicated since students who usually have a strong addiction to social
networks tend to interact with classmates who also have this dependence, thereby self-
reinforcing their behavior. They are, at the same time, students who have poor social
relationships and tend to tend towards social isolation (Echeburúa and Requesens, 2012).

The Cyberbullying and Privacy on Social Networks for example, in the case of social networks it
is much easier to access not only prohibited or violent content, but it is also not very difficult to
transmit bad messages that incite eating disorders such as anorexia, suicide or even risky
behaviors.

Also, there is the risk of creating a fictitious identity, enhanced by a factor of deception, self-
deception or fantasy. So, for example, teenagers fall in love quite a bit virtually because they
“create a reality.”

Several psychologists affirm that the treatment for excessive use of social networks is different
for each person since it depends on each person and the severity of their problem. They say
that it is necessary to treat these problems in time because in the future people addicted to
social networks could make an attempt on their lives.
