EWS emulator for

BMW motorcycles
Keyless Ride (ELock) and classic
EWS4 systems

Designed for:
BMW bikes, 2010up, EWS4 systems – classic key or Keyless Ride systems, BMSX or similar ECU. Can
manage wakeup and terminal “15” (IGNITION). May work with tact switch as original Keyless Ride or using
simple ON-OFF (rocker) switch. Not Plug & Play – must store SK into emulator.

Configuration:
Must store 16-byte security key (SK) using CAN logger or MBcan. For MBcan must use EWS4 utility.
JMP must be open, connect CAN Hi / Lo, +BAT, GND. It is necessary to send 2 CAN frames, ID 771 with first 8
bytes and ID 772 with last 8 bytes of SK. Example - if SK to store is 5C2D11C0E0CFB010176AF583C443911B -
Must send:
771 (8) 5C 2D 11 C0 E0 CF B0 10
772 (8) 17 6A F5 83 C4 43 91 1B
Emulator must respond with same data showing SK is accepted and stored, note that ID's are different:
773 (8) 5C 2D 11 C0 E0 CF B0 10
774 (8) 17 6A F5 83 C4 43 91 1B
You can request stored SK while in configuration mode (JMP open) by sending ID 770 (8), any data:
770 (8) 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
Response must be as above – ID 773 / 774 with SK actually stored.

When configured, place solder joint (short JMP) to avoid any SK updates by accident and allow
low power operation / sleep mode!

Installation:
Pin compatible with original EWS / ESCL connector, 1:1. Solder wires directly or use pins for installation
in original casing, your choice.
1. CAN-Lo
2. GND
3. WL_S
4. CAN-Hi
5. +BAT (kl
30F1)
6. +IGN (kl 15)

Operation:
Keyless Ride: may use original pushbutton switch connected to BTN pins. Short press (> 0.3 sec) turns
IGN ON, long press ( > 1 sec) switches IGN OFF.
Classic ignition switch: rocker switch or microswitch from original EWS attached to BTN pins - if
BTN is short at startup for more than 3 sec, emulator holds IGN_ON while BTN short, turns IGN_OFF when
BTN released.
Note that emulator consumes some power (2 mA) even if IGN_OFF, disconnect battery for a longer
periods of inactivity.

LEDs on emulator board:

GREEN: +IGN (Kl.15) status, if powered - LED is ON,
RED: +IGN (Kl.15) load, normally OFF. Goes ON if current is above normal ( > 1A), BLINKS if short
circuit or excess load detected ( > 2A). .
