are dependent upon its shear strength characteristics, which in
turn depend on various parameters such as the angle of internal
friction (ϕ), cohesion (c), shear deformation modulus (k), etc.
Bearing capacity concerning trafficability depends on settlement
due to soil compaction under the vehicle or overweight.
Sinkage parameters of the soil are influenced by the cohesive
modulus of deformation (kc), frictional modulus of deformation
(kϕ), and sinkage exponent (n). However, the bearing capacity is
predominantly governed by the settlementdue to shear failure.
Hence, the study of geo-mechanical properties of the lunar soil
is a prerequisite for the efficient design of rovers and landers.
The trafficability parameters are measured by performing plate
load tests and medium-scale direct shear tests. The measured
modulus of deformation (kc), frictional modulus of deformation
(kϕ), and sinkage exponent (n) values of the LSS-ISAC-1 are
1.029 kN/m2, 822.56 kN/m3, and 1.03, respectively. The values
closely represent the Apollo-16 values. Also, the geotechnical
properties, such as specific gravity, relative density, shear
strength, and compressibility behaviour of the LSS-ISAC-1,
were assessed. Fig. 3a

The geotechnical properties of the LSS-ISAC-1 were evaluated

by performing laboratory tests based on the ASTM standards.
The measured results were compared with the actual Apollo-16
soil samples and existing lunar highland soil simulants NU-

It found that the determined values represent the lunar soil
and are similar to the other simulants. The shear strength and

structures require suitable foundation systems, which should be
designed based on the static and dynamic properties of the lunar
soil. The foundation system design's dynamic soil properties are
the key parameters (shear modulus and damping ratio) because
the lunar structures will be susceptible to moonquakes. Also,
the dynamic behaviour of lunar soil and lunar simulants was
not reported in many works, i.e., available literature. Therefore,
a complete study of the dynamic behaviour of lunar soil and
simulant would enhance the possibilities for suitable foundation
systems for the lunar structures for future Moon colonization.
The cyclic triaxial equipment was used to simulate the dynamic
loading to measure the dynamic properties of the LSS-ISAC-1.
The samples were subjected to thirty loadings and unloading
for the frequency ranges of 1 Hz to 9 Hz for an amplitude
of 2 mm (average reported amplitude of moonquakes). The
number of cycles was limited to thirty since the shear modulus
values are almost constant after thirty cycles (based on
multiple trials performed on LSS-ISAC-1). The small-strain
shear wave velocity (Vs) and maximum shear modulus (Gmax)
were determined from bender element tests. The tests were
conducted for the different relative densities (Dr = 30%, 63%,
Fig. 4b: Variation of the measured damping ratio of LSS-ISAC-1

Bearing Capacity of LSS-ISAC-1

The bearing capacity (load-carrying capacity of the soil)
of the lunar soil was the critical parameter for the design of
the foundation system because the lunar structures will be
susceptible to moonquakes. Therefore, the complete study of
the lunar surface's bearing capacity of lunar soil and simulant
would enhance the possibilities of futuristic Moon Habitation.
From a geotechnical standpoint, the variation in gravity
influences the density of soil, which could play a major role
in evaluating the shear strength parameters and bearing
capacity. Previous research about the influence of gravity on the
geotechnical properties of the lunar soil strongly recommends
assessing the effect of gravity on the bearing capacity of the
lunar simulant LSS-ISAC-1. Bearing capacity and the low
gravity effect on the bearing capacity of the LSS-ISAC-1 were
measured to give the essential inputs for the design of lunar
structures and their foundation systems. The effect of footing
size (size effect) on the bearing capacity was assessed to
examine the behaviour of LSS-ISAC-1 since the application of

sizes of rover wheels, landers, lunar modules pads as well as
different foundation systems.
In order to predict and assess the influence of footing size and
gravity on bearing capacity quantitatively, regression analysis
was performed to obtain an empirical equation. An empirical
relation (Eq. 1) between the bearing capacity (dependent
variable), gravity, and footing size (independent variables)
was obtained from the multiple regression analysis and used to
predict the bearing capacity of the lunar soil simulant.
qult = 446.7G0.69 B0.69 (1)
where G = gravity of field (g); B = width of shallow footing
(m). This equation could predict the bearing capacity of Fig. 6: Lunar soil test bed at ISRO, Bangalore
shallow footing on the lunar soil for the reduced gravity and
different footing sizes and the relative density of 60 to 65%
with reasonable accuracy. The predicted bearing capacity of
the LSS-ISAC-1 was in the range of 80 kPa to 300 kPa under
lunar gravity (1/6g) and 300 kPa to 950 kPa under Earth gravity
(1g). The estimated values were compared with the actual lunar
soil and other lunar soil simulants. The comparison of bearing
capacity values is shown in Fig. 5. It is observed that the
similarity between the predicted and evaluated capacity values
is better under lunar gravity than under Earth gravity.

SUMMARY OF Ph.D THESES
Characterization of Coal Mine Overburden as Sustainable Geomaterial in
Title of Thesis:
Civil Engineering Applications

Name of the Student: Dr. Anshumali Mishra

Supervisor: Prof. Sarat Kumar Das and Prof. Krishna R. Reddy
Department & Institute: Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology
(ISM) Dhanbad

Summary: Achieving net-zero emissions is quite challenging with its 70% reliance on coal. The environment is impacted by
the hazardous waste (OB) produced by coal mining. Population increase by 2060 will put pressure on gravel and sand supplies. The
study looked into the use of OB as construction material and highlighted that water retention in concrete might cause problems.
However, the study suggests OB for flexible pavements and cement mortar as fine aggregate. This study addresses socioeconomic
issues and concentrates on the potential of OB as a sustainable geomaterial.

Investigation on the Engineering Properties of Soil Stabilized by

Title of Thesis:
Biological Methods

Name of the Student: Dr. Divya Viswanath

Supervisor: Dr. Asha M. Nair
Department & Institute: Faculty of Civil Engineering Sciences, Visveswaraya
Technological University

Summary: In this thesis the effects of Terrazyme on the index and engineering properties of lateritic and black cotton soils
have been studied through laboratory experiments. The effectiveness of bio-modification has been explored with respect to strength,
permeability and compressibility characteristics of blended soils, for varying dosages of Terrazyme and ageing. Terrazyme application
was found to effectively reduce the pavement thickness and improve the pavement life, under varying traffic conditions and curing
periods. Cost benefit analysis has also been carried out to quantify the advantages of biological stabilization. Microstructural studies
exposed a change in soil structure from flocculated to that of dispersed. Application of bio-modified BC soil has also been evaluated
with respect to its use as landfill liner.

Title Performance Based Design of RC Members Subjected to Blast Loading

Name of Student: Dr. Anita Bhatt

Supervisor: Dr. Pradeep Bhargava and Dr. Priti Maheshwari
Department & Institute: Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee,
Roorkee

Summary: A closed-form solution using coupled SDOF analytical method was established to account for the interaction between
flexure and shear elastic-plastic responses directly for wide-ranged (near to very distant) blast-loaded reinforced members, which
took into consideration all modes of failure (flexure, direct shear, diagonal-shear, flexure-shear). P-I diagrams using proposed
coupled SDOF model subjected to blast loading were also studied. Considering pre-defined target deflections as governing
performance criteria, a performance-based design methodology for the coupled single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system were
produced using the concept of Equivalent static force (ESF) and energy spectra for optimization of design parameters. The study
suggested that the coupled SDOF system formulation yields a closer response irrespective of the blast scenario (near/ moderate/
distant).

Role of A-priori Information in Minimizing Uncertainties in MASW Testing
Title of Thesis:
and Subsequent Site Response Analysis

Name of Student: Dr. Aniket Desai

Supervisor: Prof. Ravi Sankar Jakka
Department & Institute: Department of Earthquake Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology
Roorkee, Uttarakhand

Summary: The most popular method for estimating the shear wave velocity (Vs) profile of the soil, the multichannel analysis
of surface waves (MASW) test, suffers from several uncertainties, leading to inaccurate seismic hazard assessment. This thesis
explores the minimization of these uncertainties using a-priori information. By incorporating a-priori information about soil layers
obtained from standard geotechnical field investigations, the research demonstrates a significant reduction in all three types of
uncertainties in MASW and subsequent site response analysis (SRA). The results emphasize the critical role of a-priori information
in MASW and SRA, ensuring more accurate outcomes and enhancing the reliability of earthquake-resistant design.

Title
of Thesis: Analysis of Machine Foundations under Blast Loading

Name of Student: Dr. Kirtika Samanta

Supervisor: Dr. Priti Maheshwari
Department & Institute: Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology
Roorkee, Roorkee
Summary: Machine foundations impart an effective working platform for stable, efficient and safe operation of machines. The
response of machine foundations was studied under harmonic and blast loading by means of theoretical formulations and numerical
computations considering it as an elastic-plastic single degree of freedom system. Linearly decaying triangular pulse with positive
phase and an exponentially decaying pulse with positive and negative phase was adopted for blast load modelling. The study also
aimed to determine the response of machine foundation when an emergency shutdown is encountered. The generated results may
be useful in designing suitable barriers for vibration mitigation.

Title Seismic Analysis of Bunds Considering Coconut Root Reinforcement

Name of Student: Dr. Leonardo Roque Do Carmo Souza

Supervisor: Prof. Purnanand P. Savoikar
Department & Institute: Civil Engineering Department, Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, Goa

Summary: This thesis focuses on exploring the seismic stability of Traditional Goan Saraswat Bunds (TGSB) and the
contribution of coconut roots in strengthening it. The TGSBs are the best reliable option for low-rise embankments since coconut
root reinforcement and traditional soil stabilization makes these seismically better which can be proven by simple computer-based
assessment by using Microsoft Excel, GeoStudio and Midas GTX NX. The factor of safety for dynamic condition is almost half that
for static condition. The above study shows that the existence of roots tremendously increases stability and factor of safety of TGSB
so existing TGSBs are statically and seismically safe.

Pond Ash, RBI Grade 81 as Stabilizers and Polyester Fibre as Reinforcement

Name of Student: Dr. Gaurav Gupta

Supervisor: Dr. Hemant Sood and Dr. Pardeep Gupta
Department & Institute: Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University,Chandigarh

Summary: This research work adds a significant contribution towards designing sustainable and economical pavements by
stabilizing soil subgrades with brick kiln dust, pond ash, RBI Grade 81 and polyester fibre under the effect of repeated loading by
performing advanced cyclic load triaxial test. Performance evaluation of commercial soil stabilizers and fibres in strengthening

Seismic Stability Analysis of Landfill Veneer Cover Systems -

Title of Thesis:
A Reliability Based Approach

Name of Student: Dr. Dabbiru Soujanya

Supervisor: Dr. B. Munwar Basha
Department & Institute: Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Hyderabad,

Summary: This study assesses the deterministic and probabilistic stability of landfill veneer cover systems against direct-
sliding failure (DSF) and uplifted-floating failure (UFF) modes, accounting for variability in shear strength and seismic parameters.
Employing the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), Second Order Reliability Method (SORM), and Monte Carlo Simulations
(MCS), the research highlights the superior precision of SORM over FORM. A novel framework for System Reliability-Based
Design Optimization (SRBDO) is proposed, indicating that system reliability is significantly influenced by the lowest component
reliability index. The study compares static, Pseudo-static, Pseudo-dynamic, and Modified Pseudo-dynamic methods, providing
design charts to estimate cover soil thickness for reliability in both DSF and UFF modes.
