Summary: Achieving net-zero emissions is quite challenging with its 70% reliance on coal. The environment is impacted by
the hazardous waste (OB) produced by coal mining. Population increase by 2060 will put pressure on gravel and sand supplies. The
study looked into the use of OB as construction material and highlighted that water retention in concrete might cause problems.
However, the study suggests OB for flexible pavements and cement mortar as fine aggregate. This study addresses socioeconomic
issues and concentrates on the potential of OB as a sustainable geomaterial.
Summary: In this thesis the effects of Terrazyme on the index and engineering properties of lateritic and black cotton soils
have been studied through laboratory experiments. The effectiveness of bio-modification has been explored with respect to strength,
permeability and compressibility characteristics of blended soils, for varying dosages of Terrazyme and ageing. Terrazyme application
was found to effectively reduce the pavement thickness and improve the pavement life, under varying traffic conditions and curing
periods. Cost benefit analysis has also been carried out to quantify the advantages of biological stabilization. Microstructural studies
exposed a change in soil structure from flocculated to that of dispersed. Application of bio-modified BC soil has also been evaluated
with respect to its use as landfill liner.

Title Performance Based Design of RC Members Subjected to Blast Loading
Summary: A closed-form solution using coupled SDOF analytical method was established to account for the interaction between
flexure and shear elastic-plastic responses directly for wide-ranged (near to very distant) blast-loaded reinforced members, which
took into consideration all modes of failure (flexure, direct shear, diagonal-shear, flexure-shear). P-I diagrams using proposed
coupled SDOF model subjected to blast loading were also studied. Considering pre-defined target deflections as governing
performance criteria, a performance-based design methodology for the coupled single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system were
produced using the concept of Equivalent static force (ESF) and energy spectra for optimization of design parameters. The study
suggested that the coupled SDOF system formulation yields a closer response irrespective of the blast scenario (near/ moderate/
distant).
Summary: The most popular method for estimating the shear wave velocity (Vs) profile of the soil, the multichannel analysis
of surface waves (MASW) test, suffers from several uncertainties, leading to inaccurate seismic hazard assessment. This thesis
explores the minimization of these uncertainties using a-priori information. By incorporating a-priori information about soil layers
obtained from standard geotechnical field investigations, the research demonstrates a significant reduction in all three types of
uncertainties in MASW and subsequent site response analysis (SRA). The results emphasize the critical role of a-priori information
in MASW and SRA, ensuring more accurate outcomes and enhancing the reliability of earthquake-resistant design.

Title Seismic Analysis of Bunds Considering Coconut Root Reinforcement
Summary: This thesis focuses on exploring the seismic stability of Traditional Goan Saraswat Bunds (TGSB) and the
contribution of coconut roots in strengthening it. The TGSBs are the best reliable option for low-rise embankments since coconut
root reinforcement and traditional soil stabilization makes these seismically better which can be proven by simple computer-based
assessment by using Microsoft Excel, GeoStudio and Midas GTX NX. The factor of safety for dynamic condition is almost half that
for static condition. The above study shows that the existence of roots tremendously increases stability and factor of safety of TGSB
so existing TGSBs are statically and seismically safe.
Investigations for Soil Subgrade Strength Improvement using Brick Kiln Dust,
Title of Thesis:
Pond Ash, RBI Grade 81 as Stabilizers and Polyester Fibre as Reinforcement
Summary: This research work adds a significant contribution towards designing sustainable and economical pavements by
stabilizing soil subgrades with brick kiln dust, pond ash, RBI Grade 81 and polyester fibre under the effect of repeated loading by
performing advanced cyclic load triaxial test. Performance evaluation of commercial soil stabilizers and fibres in strengthening

soil subgrades, development of correlation between CBR and resilient modulus and determining the benefits of designing
pavements with Advanced cyclic load triaxial test based resilient modulus over CBR-based resilient modulus are the outcome of
the study.
Summary: This study assesses the deterministic and probabilistic stability of landfill veneer cover systems against direct-
sliding failure (DSF) and uplifted-floating failure (UFF) modes, accounting for variability in shear strength and seismic parameters.
Employing the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), Second Order Reliability Method (SORM), and Monte Carlo Simulations
(MCS), the research highlights the superior precision of SORM over FORM. A novel framework for System Reliability-Based
Design Optimization (SRBDO) is proposed, indicating that system reliability is significantly influenced by the lowest component
reliability index. The study compares static, Pseudo-static, Pseudo-dynamic, and Modified Pseudo-dynamic methods, providing
design charts to estimate cover soil thickness for reliability in both DSF and UFF modes.
