LO 1 THE INTRODUCTION
• First impression is important in everything. A poor beginning may so distract or alienate
listeners that a speaker can never fully recover. A good introduction is an excellent
confidence booster.
• There are four objectives of the introduction:
i. Get attention and interest
ii. Reveal the topic
iii. Establish credibility and goodwill
iv. Preview the body of the speech
RHETORICAL QUESTION
A question that the audience answers mentally rather than out loud.
➢ When using this technique, be sure to pause for just a moment after each question
to give time for the audience to answer the questions mentally.
• Begin with a quotation
➢ You can choose your quotation from Shakespeare or Confucius, from Holy Quran
or others, a poem, songs and so on to arouse the interest of your audience.
• Tell a story
➢ Everybody will enjoy and pay attention to great stories especially if they are
provocative, dramatic, or suspenseful You can also use your story based on your
own experienced to make your introduction more interesting.
CREDIBILITY
The audience's perception of whether a speaker is qualified to speak on a
given topic.
• Your credibility does not need to be first-hand knowledge and experience; it can come
from reading, from classes, interviews and so on.

LO 2 THE CONCLUSION
The two major functions of the conclusion are as follow:
• Signal the end of the speech
➢ Giving signals and cues to the audience that you are going to end the speech
anytime soon.
