INTRODUCTION
A building that unites and permits two completely distinct functions to be produced in
each area is known as a hybrid structure. Additionally, hybrid architecture makes it
possible to expand and adapt beyond the usual limits. Similar to how scientists combine
two distinct DNAs and allow them to mutate to discover new things, hybrid architecture
pushes boundaries to find new ways to design structures that take human comfort and
every available area into account. Hybrid architecture expands the possibilities of the
constructed environment by skillfully combining competing components via the fusion of
several styles, technologies, and materials. As a result of this discovery, this solved the
problem of the different challenges of the modern world. This hybrid architecture is
frequently found in residential buildings, such as split-type buildings, where the lot—
which is typically on a slope or in an uneven terrain—is maximized to create an effective
design. It also gives architects creative freedom to experiment with different forms for
the building's exterior and interior. Typically, Split-type architecture is paired with modern
features like glass and windows, as well as modern lighting fixtures. The staircase is a
desirable element that enhances vertical circulation while also harmonizing with the
home's overall architectural style. Being able to create a structure on a slope opens up
more design possibilities since, in most cases, a view on a slope becomes another
factor that should be taken into consideration, and occasionally given priority. Aside
from stores and small businesses, one of the best applications of hybrid architecture
style is with residencies with clinics. Clinic design is an essential part of the larger area
of healthcare architecture; it shapes rooms that are tailored to the specific requirements
of patients and medical workers. Given how busy a clinic is, building a new one usually
still requires careful design and layout to guarantee a smooth and orderly patient flow.
Accessibility and adaptability are two additional typical requirements for clinics. Since a
clinic is a public area, it must be designed to accommodate all users, including those
with disabilities. This is accomplished by providing larger and accessible entrances,
ramps, and rails inside the structure. Its placement in a residential area facilitates
simpler access to healthcare for those who live nearby. When creating a clinic,
architects must develop spaces that not only adhere to tight health and safety
requirements but also create a healing atmosphere that is good for the health of the
patients.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Hybrid – Organic Architecture as Healing Architecture

The architectural concept for this residence is to focus more on adapting the
surroundings of the space and being one with it. This design integrates more with the
environment using natural materials, maximizing the use of natural lighting and
combining different elements that will develop the design. Combining it with Hybrid
Architecture, making this structure an adaptable space, suitable for children develops
the possibilities of what key elements to consider. Knowing the client is a pediatrician,
having children as her patients, using organic architecture creates a sense for the
children of being ‘outside’ and free while being inside the structure knowing how most of
the children love to play. Approaching this design, the natural forms and curves can
create a soothing and non-intrusive environment. Spaces with soft, flowing lines and
gentle curves can contribute to a sense of calmness and relaxation, which is the main
goal of this residence.

DESIGN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

-To design a hybrid structure that gives continuity and connectivity between the interior
and exterior of the residential building with clinic with the use of proper selection of
elements to include in the plan.
 To ensure the privacy of the client while having a connection in the design of the
structure.
 To create a design that has a sense of separation between the residential
structure and the office area.
 To prioritize the customers, specifically the children, in the clinic area by creating
a safe and encouraging design such as considering the use of curve areas and
advanced smart film/glass.

-To create a design that will ensure that the clinic will be able to generate profit in the
long run
 To produce a timeless design with the use of proper selection of materials
throughout the entire area.
 To create an effective and efficient layout for both, the house and the clinic by
locating the space requirements in a proper orientation.

CASE STUDY
This case study examines through the split-level residence layout and identify any
possible issues that might arise during the process. Considering responsibility for the
client's demands as well as the space's limits. This case study will give significant
concepts and insight into project design.

Split-Level Houses
Ghat House / Max Núñez (2015) Zapallar, Chile
The split-level residential located in Chile is strategically designed in a 25° slope. The
layout, design, and the ease of use in every area of the house is planned in line with the
conditions of the topography. Having that said, the use of the slope as a way to
introduce the split-level design is a creative way of maximizing the spaces and create a
sense of unity within the interior of the residential area. The materials used in the project
suits great making the structure since glass allows natural light to enter the interiors
reducing the use of artificial light. Wood and cement also helped with creating a clean
look of the interior’s aesthetic and with thermal insulation.

ADAPTABLE IDEAS

 Wide staircases that can also be used as stair seating.

 Creating wide openings to have a better view outside

Tiered Lodge / Naoi Architecture & Design Office (2011) Tochigi, Japan

A split-level lodge in Japan designed in a slope, having a connection between the

structure and the high density of trees surrounding the area is a great approach to this
design. Designers also considered utilizing natural light by placing windows; the use of
windows also gives a sense of continuity to the area by connecting the elements used in
the interior and exterior of the residential structure. Proper orientation of areas also
helps with the circulation of the activities done by the clients.

ADAPTABLE IDEAS

 Utilizing the vista in the terrain to create a sense of connection between

the terrain and the structure.
 The use of wood in this project creates a flow from the interior throughout
the lanai of the lodge.

Clinics

The Apple Tree Pediatrician’s Office / studiomateriality (2020) Kozani, Greece

The
Apply Tree Pediatrician’s Office located in
Greece has a unique interior and introduced a
great way of utilizing how to appropriately use
bright colors. The use of bright and playful
colors exhibits a way of how colors can change
the mood of a space. In this scenario, having
various colors in a type of place like a clinic
helps with setting the mood of what the clients
may feel, specifically the children. Other elements are also used in this design such as
introducing the use of curved doors and windows; Having it said, this idea breaks the
barriers in having a typical spatial configuration of having a square plan. Combining all
the elements used in this design creates a sense of welcoming to the clients that are
catered in the office.

ADAPTABLE IDEAS

 Proper layout and arrangement of rooms

 Use of curves and rounded corners
 The concept of using cool colors

Pediatric Clinic / Pineda Monedero (2022) Sabadell, Spain

The Pediatric Clinic

located in Spain
designed to serve
clients, specifically the
children. The layout of
this area signifies the
process of pregnancy,
from entering the light
through a small opening
after entering a cozy,
enveloping area (the
waiting room). Users pass an entryway
(bathroom and reception) and enter
an open area lighted through a roof
(consultation room). A tree grows in
the middle, visible from the street, and as
people pass, it draws them inside to observe
what is transpiring. The client/s will then meet
the pediatrician under the tree, just as we
did at birth.

The use of curves in areas helps changing an intimidating design by replacing straight
angles and dull materials with tactile, warm, and inviting design. The use of curves also
helps with the safety, knowing how children loves to run around places, it lessens the
risk of having an injury from sharp surfaces. The use of chairs in this area could’ve been
better by changing it into couches to provide a much comfortable environment.

ADAPTABLE IDEAS

 The use of smooth curves for walls and furniture throughout the project
 Use of the plants as an element to enhance the ambiance of the space

Hybrid (Residence with Offices)

Tiam Coffee Shop & Home / Nguyen Khai Architects & Associates (2020) Hue,
Vietnam

A café-residential area located in Vietnam shows a great way of utilizing a small corner
space to stand-out. The use of light color in this project helped in producing a neat look
and aid also gave chance for the potteries, furniture, and the overall of the house be
noticeable. Introducing the different use of geometrical shapes with the louvers
developed the design, not only by reducing the heat, but as well as with how the
structure plays with natural light, inside and outside of the vicinity. Having a split-level
residence in a terrain also enables the concept of designing for a great layout that
emphasizes more on the vista outside the location.

ADAPTABLE IDEAS

 Use of louvers for reducing natural light and have a play of shadows and
lighting.

 Application of lighter colors helps developing the mood of the structure
