Find the divergence of the vector field in three dimensions:

𝐹(⃗ 𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 𝑥 2 𝒊 + 2𝑧𝒋 – 𝑦𝒌
SOLUTION:

The divergence of a vector field F ( r )=F x i+ F y j+ F z k in three dimensions is given by the

following expression:

∂ F x ∂ F y ∂ Fz
¿ ( F )= + +
∂x ∂ y ∂z

For the given vector field F ( r )=x 2 i+2 zj− yk , we can find the partial derivatives:

∂ 2
( x ) =2 x
∂x

( 2 z ) =0
∂y

(− y )=0
∂z

Now, we can substitute these into the expression for the divergence:

¿ ( F )=2 x+ 0+0=2 x

So, the divergence of the given vector field is ¿(F )=2 x.

Check whether the vector field is conservative or not?

curl F=−5

curl F ≠ 0

So, the curl of the vector field is not zero. Therefore, the vector field is not conservative.
