Calculate also the torque & its effects when the ship is pitching in simple harmonic
motion. The bow falling with its maximum velocity. The period of pitching is 50 seconds
& the total angular displacement bet n the two extreme positions of pitching is 12º. Find
the maximum acceleration during pitching motion.

OR

6. a) Explain the factors opposing the motion of the vehicle. 6

b) Find the power of the car of mass 1200 kg including 5 passenger, luggage, fuel, 7
lubricating oil & colling system. Engine is running in top gear at 5500 rpm, size of the
wheel is 0.610 m. crown wheel to pinion ratio =4.3:1, frontal area of the body = 2.5m 2 .
The rolling resistance is given by (Rr = 0.015 mg + 0.00055 mgv) . The coefficient of air
resistance is 0.027 & transmission efficiency is 0.90.

SECTION – B

7. a) Derive an expression for the natural frequency of longitudinal vibrations by equilibrium 6

b) Three rotors A, B and C having moment of inertia of 2000, 6000, & 3500 kg-m2 respectively 7
are carried on a uniform shaft of 0.35m diameter. The length of the shaft between the rotors
A and B is 6m and between B and C is 32 m. Find the natural frequency of the torsional
vibrations. The modulus of rigidity for the shaft material is 80 GN / m 2 .

b) Two parallel shafts A and B of diameters 50 mm and 70 mm respectively are connected by 7
a pair of gear wheels, the speed of A being 4 times that of B. The flywheel of mass moment
of inertia 3 kg-m2 is mounted on shaft A at a distance of 0.9 m from the gears. The shaft B
also carries a flywheel of mass moment of inertia 16 kg-m2 at a distance of 0.6 m from the
gears. Neglecting the affect of the shaft & gear masses, calculate the fundamental frequency
of free torsional oscillations & the position of node.

9. a) Deduce an expression for the natural frequency of free transverse vibrations for a beam 6
fixed at both ends and carrying a uniformly distributed mass of m kg per unit length.

b) Calculate the whirling speed of a shaft 20 mm diameter and 0.6 m long carrying a mass of 7
