disarmingly assured first solo transposes
the solemn literary text to early ‘80s
Helsinki, where an endless nocturnal spell
casts on his lonely character. Taking a cold-
blooded revenge on his wife’s murderer,
a slaughterhouse worker wavers between
freedom and redemption, as he plays a cat-
and-mouse chase with the police. Channelling
Bresson’s minimalist approach, Aki shows
the first glimpse of his recognisable sombre,
detached style, translating the questions about
guilt and responsibility into the highlights of
social awareness, mental anguish and moral
dilemmas.

collector and a supermarket cashier, whose

A compelling blend of gritty realism and escapist


fantasy, this second part of the ‘Proletarian
Trilogy’ elevates Aki to the pantheon of world
cinema. It all begins when a hapless coalminer
is laid off as Finland switches to nuclear power.

nihilism of 1970s punk rock, Aki champions his

top of its Cadillac – bought from a cameoing
Jim Jarmusch. In a strange genre hybrid
recklessly mixing musical, comedy, and road

mockery of capitalistic degradation down the

relationships. In his vibrantly scrappy adaptation
shot in gorgeous black and white, Aki makes a
laid-back and coolly funny update of his beloved
Henri Murger novel. Featuring cameos by
Louis Malle and Samuel Fuller, this deceptively
querulous comedy satirises the conventions of
art and romance, while exalting them as the
only means of salvation.

laid off by the tram company, and his wife
loses her job at a bankrupt restaurant. As
the desperation and humiliation of searching
for work begin to take their toll, they find
themselves facing a life crisis. Addressing
the sorrows of unemployment in the first
instalment of his ‘Loser Trilogy’, Aki places his
Finnish reality in between the gritty realism of
Bicycle Thieves and the joyful optimism of It’s
a Wonderful Life , delivering one of his most
poignant and compassionate works. The sets,
the props, and the vivid colour schemes all
conspire to overwhelm the ill-fated ironies,
giving heartwarming humanism and a sense of
hope.

embraces a nameless man, who loses his
memory after being savagely beaten by
muggers. He joins some homeless folk living
in genteel contentment in empty containers,
as love blossoms with the Salvation Army
lady. A brightly idiosyncratic testament to
a community’s capacity for resilience and
kindness, this uplifting comedy is a rarified
blend of heartfelt socio-political sensitivity and
Kaurismäki-esque deadpan. Tähti steals the

in his subjugation to experimental, mind-
altering treatments. Based on Anthony Burgess’
eponymous darkly comic novel, but notably
omitting its redemptive final chapter, Kubrick
and McDowell created a pop culture icon in the
Beethoven-loving, Nasdat-spewing delinquent,
who becomes a pawn in a political campaign
for subservience and control.

Żuławski delivered this beastly picture of
insanity, fear and evil. Political prisoner Jakub,
already worn down by torture, is freed from
jail by a black-caped character and manipulated
into mounting mania. The stranger takes Jakub
to family, friends and others, and at each stop
prods the ex-prisoner to kill. Żuławski based
the tale on Polish authorities’ 1968 stoking of
student protests as an excuse for crackdowns,
and cloaked the theme with 18th century
costume, a frenzied atmosphere and fuzzed-
out psych rock. Censors weren’t impressed,
and the film lay banned for 17 years. A fierce
exploration of mind games and madness.
