Everyone knows that good sleep is vitally important for our health. Not everyone knows how important it
is to sleep in the dark. A new report says that sleeping with the light on could be bad for our health.
Trang 2/4
Researchers say that turning off the light when we sleep helps to keep away diabetes and heart diseases.
Sleeping with the light on could increase the risk of getting these diseases. The researchers said that around 40
percent of people sleep with some sort of artificial light. They said even the light from a television or alarm
clock could affect our health. They added that the worst thing to sleep with is a main light. Sleeping in the
dark is more difficult for people who live in cities where there is a lot of outdoor light at night.
The researchers are from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, USA. Dr
Phyllis Zee, who is an expert in sleep medicine, is the lead researcher. She said that it is healthier for us to turn
off all lights when we sleep. Her team conducted a study of the blood sugar levels of 20 people after nights of
sleep. The people who slept with a light on had higher blood sugar levels the next morning compared to those
who slept in total darkness. Dr. Zee said this is because light stimulates brain activity, which raises blood
sugar levels. She said there are three things we can do to reduce the risk of illness. The first thing is we should
turn off the lights. Moreover, we should never sleep with white or blue light. Finally, it is a good idea to use a
blackout curtain or wear an eye mask.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
For many adults, a typical work day might be as follows: The alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. You dress
yourself in expensive work clothes, gobble down breakfast, and start off on your long and stressful commute
to the office. You spend your day at your desk, attempting to complete your tasks amid coworker chitchat and
office politics. Then, you make your way home through the commuter crowds. You have just enough time for
a few hours of relaxation before you have to get up and repeat the process all over again the next day. For
these people, telecommuting might be seen as the answer to the daily stress and frustration of office jobs.
Telecommuting, also known as teleworking or working from home, is a term that refers to the use of
telecommunication to work away from the company’s office, most often at a home office. Few people
telecommute full time, but a growing number of companies are allowing their employees to work from home
at least part of the time.
Employers have met this growing demand to work from home with both acceptance and resistance. On
the one hand, employers understand that offering telecommuting opportunities is a way to cut costs. In
addition, offering telecommuting opportunities reduces absenteeism, increases productivity, and improves
employee retention. Workers are happier and less stressed. Therefore, they work harder and are more loyal to
their employers.

Trang 3/4
On the other hand, employers are aware of the fact that telecommuting poses some risks. First of all,
allowing confidential company information to leave the office can pose privacy and security concerns. In
addition, telecommuters are not properly trained in protecting company data. Another risk has to do with the
work style of the telecommuter. A successful telecommuter has to be independent, self-motivated, and
disciplined.
Experts predict that telecommuting will become a standard in the corporate world, as workers continue to
demand it. The trend toward telecommuting is clear, but the long-term effects on corporate culture and the
individual worker are still unknown.
