GERUNDS & INFINITIVES

GERUNDS: VERB + ING
We use the gerund in these cases:

After prepositions and phrasal verbs: look up, take


care of, from, for, of, by, keep up with, on, etc.
When it's the subject of the sentence
After some verbs: hate, love, like, enjoy, don't mind,
etc.
COMMON VERBS FOLLOWED BY A GERUND
Admit Keep Spend time
Avoid Like Stop
Deny Love Suggest
Dislike Mind Quit
Enjoy Miss Fancy
Feel like Practise Appreciate
Finish Prefer Give up
Hate Recommend Delay
INFINITIVE: VERB + TO
We use the infinitive in these cases:

After adjectives: It's difficult to get up early.


To express a purpose or a reason: I came to Berlin to study
German.
After some verbs: want, need, learn, etc.

NEGATIVE FORMS
Gerund: I hate NOT being on time for things.
I don't mind getting up early.

Infinitive: She told me NOT to worry.


I really want him NOT to come.
THE INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO
After make & let
Example: My best friend always makes me smile.
My parents didn't let me go last night.
After most modal and auxiliary verbs.
Example: I can't drive very fast.
We must hurry or we'll be late.
