TIME AND DATE OF EVENT
• The most recent landslides in Himachal Pradesh
happened in the districts of Baddi Area, Mandi and
Shimla on the 14-
15 August 2023 (Situation Report of the Ministry of
Home Affairs).
• In Uttarakhand, the most recent landslides
happened in Rudraprayag on the 16 August 2023

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been
facing intense rains which have been causing
flooding and Landslides since 9 July 2023.
ABOUT THE DISASTER
Heavy rainfall is being experienced in almost all
areas of North India, which has caused a series of
flash flood .And landslide events and associated
devastation across the region. The overall death toll
is surging to 91 in the Nearly 50 incidents of
landslides and dozens of flash floods in the hilly
region so far, and more than 1,000 roads Remain
unusable.
Several people got isolated in different areas due to
the serious disruption of infrastructure and
Communication. IMD has forecast very heavy
rainfall in the region for the next 24 hours as well.
CURRENT SCENARIO
Himachal Pradesh
• The rain continues to wreak havoc in Himachal
Pradesh and Uttarakhand. IMD has also issued
alerts for Light to moderate precipitation associated
with thunderstorm/lightning likely to continue in
many parts Of the States for subsequent 3 to 4 days.
Furthermore, another heavy spell is possible from 20
August.
• Flash floods along watershed and other channels in
district of Chamba, Kangra, Solan, Kullu, Hamirpur,
Bilaspur, Shimla, Mandi Localized flooding of roads.
• Landslides were reported in vulnerable areas. Poor
visibility conditions in hilly district of the state are
Creating difficulty to commute.
• Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh informed that
the disaster is mainly in Mandi district and Shimla
Town this time. In Shimla town, 15 people have lost
their lives and 10 people are missing.
• All school and colleges in Himachal Pradesh have
been shut and more than 700 roads have been closed
Due to flooding.
Uttarakhand:
• In Rishikesh, three people were killed and 10 are
missing after several rain-related incidents. The city
Recorded the highest amount of rainfall across the
country on Monday.
• A number of roads leading to Badrinath,
Kedarnath, and Gangotri shrines were damaged due
to Landslides.
• As heavy rains lashed the Joshimath town of
Uttarakhand, fresh cracks emerged raising the level
of fear Among the residents of the state.
• The major highways in the hill areas including
Kalak-Shimla, Kirtpur-Manali, and
Pathankot-Mandi, Dharamsala-Shimla remain
blocked.
• In Rudraprayag, farms and barns have washed
away due to land and soil erosion, which were the
result Of continuous rain.
• In Gaurikund and Kedarnath, 23 people have gone
missing. Additionally, three dead bodies were found.
GOVERNMENT RELIEF OPERATIONS
Himachal Pradesh:
• A total of six teams of National Disaster Relief
Force (NDRF)are deployed in Kangra district where
many Villages in Indore, Fatehpur and Jawalmukhi
constituencies were flooded due to the release of
excess by The Pong dam.
• The Indian Air Force is engaged in airlifting
stranded villagers in the Kangra district area.
• Rescue operations by NDRF, SDRF, army, local
police, and home guards are underway on the
massive Landslide occurred in Summer Hill area.
• Rescue operations are underway by SDRF, local
police and administration in Krishna Nagar area in
Himachal Pradesh's Shimla after a landslide took
place.
Uttarakhand:
• Around 7o pilgrims were stranded on the trek route
to the Madmaheshwar temple in Uttarakhand's
Rudraprayag district but were safely evacuated on
Wednesday with a helicopter by the State
Disaster Relief Force (SDRF).
EVOLVING NEEDS
• Assess and provide temporary shelter for displaced
for ensuring safety.
• Evaluate health status and establish medical camps
for basic health care service.
• Assess the availability and distribution of food and
water resources. Provide immediate relief supplies to
Affected communities, ensuring access to clean
drinking water and adequate food supplies.
• Prioritize the clearance of blocked roads and repair
damaged infrastructure to restore transportation
routes And ensure access to affected areas.
• Provide psychosocial support to individuals and
communities affected by the disaster. Establish
Counselling services to address trauma and promote
mental well-being.
• Develop plans for the rehabilitation and
sustainable recovery of affected communities.
Provide livelihood Support, such as vocational
training and employment opportunities, to help
affected individuals rebuild Their lives.
CONCLUSIONS
Needs assessment is underway. Immediate relief
required is as follows:
• Food and NFI for affected families Shelter support
for displaced families
• Psychosocial support for displaced families
• Livelihood restoration support
