Final Examination in ME 312

Refrigeration System

1. An IQF (individually-quick-frozen) freezer processing 0.8 kg/s (1.76 lb/s) of sweet corn
kernels cools, freezes, and ultimately drops the temperature to 18°C (0°F). The product
enters the process at a temperature of 40°C (104°F). The freezer has a dimension of 10
m x 6 m x 4 m (Width x Length x Height). The total product to be stored is 50,000 kgs
and 4 people will work for 6 hours. There are 3 lamps at 120W each, running 4 hours a
day and 4 fans with 400W each. Assuming that the door will create 5 volume air changes per
day due to the product entering and leaving the warehouse, the volume is calculated as 160m3,
each cubic meter of new air is 2kJ /°C, the outside air is 30°C and the air inside the warehouse is
1°C.

Note:
• The walls and floors are insulated with 120 mm polyurethane with a U 0.28W / m2.K
value. The floor is insulated Thickness 140 mm U 0.42 W / m2.K. and has a temperature
of 10°C. Every day, 6,000 kg of sweet corn kernels s arrive at the freezer at a
temperature of 10 °C and a heat capacity of 0.87 kcal/kg.

Calculate the following:

a. Transmission load
b. Product Load
c. Cooling Load from Product respiration
d. Calculation of Cooling Load from Humans
e. Calculation of Cooling Load from Lighting
f. Calculation of Cooling Load from Fan Motors
g. Cooling Load from Infiltration, and
h. The total cooling load.
