Subject: ENGINEERING MECHANICS (Module A)

Time: 3 Hours Full Marks: 100

Different questions of same group are to be answered together

Group -1

Answer any two (2) from the followings. 2 x 10 =20 Marks

1a. Find out the moment of the tension T= 21N about


base O of the crane as shown in FIGURE-1a.

1b. The 500 kg uniform beam is subjected to the three external


loads as shown in FIGURE- 1b. Compute the reactions at the
support point O. The x-y plane is vertical.

1c. A loaded cantilever beam as shown in FIGURE-1c.


Find the moment of forces about O.

1d. The 30-N force P is applied perpendicular to the portion BC of the bent bar. Determine the moment of P
about point B and about point A.( FIGURE- 1d.)

Answer any three (3) from the following questions. 3 x 10 =30 Marks

2a. A smooth ball of radius r and weight 10N is


supported by a wire of length 2r as shown in
FIGURE-2a. Angle between the walls is 90⁰.
Find out reaction of each wall.

2b. In FIGURE- 2b, a vertical boom AE is supported


by guy wires from A to B, C and D. If the tensile
load in AD = 2320 N, find the forces in AC and AB
so that the resultant force on A will be vertical.

2c. A block of weight 500Kgf is kept in equilibrium


by wedge as shown in FIGURE- 2c. Determine
the force P necessary. The coefficient of friction
is 0.2 for all surfaces and the wedge has a weight
of 50Kgf.

2d. (i) State the Coulomb's law of friction/ state the laws of static friction.
(ii) Explain clearly the term 'Angel of Repose'?
Find the relation between angle of friction and angle of repose.
(iii) What are the applications of friction in engineering? 3+5+2= 10 Marks

2e. A force P is applied to string wound around large roller as shown in FIGURE- 2d. Assume µ same for all
contact surfaces, determine necessary condition for larger roller can be pulled over the smaller one.

2f. A sphere of weight 100 N and radius 10 cm hangs by a string AB = 20 cm and rests against a
smooth vertical wall at C as shown in the FIGURE- 2e. Determine the force F in the string AB and
normal reaction at C.

3a. Locate the centroid of the shaded area


as shown in FIGURE-3a.

3c. Determine the area moment of inertia of the I-section (FIGURE-3c) about centroidal axis xg .

3d. Using integration, find the area and centroidal


distance xc of the shaded area as shown in
FIGURE- 3d. Using Pappus-Guidinus,
find the volume of the solid formed
by revolution about Y-axis. Compare
the result of volume as calculated by
direct integration method.

3e. Determine the area M.I. of the rectangular lamina


about the centroidal x0 and y0-axis, the centroidal
polar axis z0 through C , the x-axis, and
the polar axis z through O as shown in FIGURE-3e.

3f. State and prove the parallel and perpendicular axes theorems of moment of Inertia of lamina

Answer any three (3) from the following questions. 3 x 10 =30 Marks

4a. Show that Rmax = u² /g(1 ± sinβ), where u = velocity of projection, β = inclined angle between
plan and horizontal.

4b. A projectile is launched with an initial speed of 200 m/sec at an angle of 60ᴼ with respect to the
horizontal as shown in FIGURE - 4a. Compute the range ‘R’ as measured up the incline.

4c. Find the tangential and normal acceleration components of a moving particle in
curvilinear path.

Or

Show that a = atêt + (v²/ρ)ên; where at = tangential component of acceleration, v = speed,


ρ = radius of curvature of path and ê t and ên are unit vector along tangent and normal
respectively.

4d. The rotation of the 3 meters arm ΄OA΄ as shown in FIGURE-4d, is defined by the
relation θ = 0.20t², where ΄θ΄ is expressed in radian and t in second. Block ΄B΄ slides along
the arm in such a way that its distance from ΄O΄ is r = 3 - 0.40t², where ΄r΄ is expressed in
metre and ΄t΄ in second. Dtermine the total velocity and acceleration of block ΄B΄ after arm
΄OA΄ has rotated through 30ᴼ. Also draw the F. B. D. of this system.

4e A system of two pulleys is shown in FIGURE-4e. Find the
relations connecting the displacements, velocities and
accelerations of the blocks A and B.

4f. The block as shown in FIGURE – 4f, has a mass of 150 Kg and rests on a rough plane
for which μs = 0.5 and μk = 0.4. If a force P(t) = 60t² N(t is in seconds) is applied to the
string, find the power development by the force when t = 5 seconds.

4g. A body weighing 300 N is pushed up in a 30° inclined plane by a 400 N force acting
parallel to the plane. If the initial velocity of the body is 1.5 m/s and coefficient of friction is
µ = 0.2, what velocity will the body have after moving 6 m? (Use work-energy method)
