ACTIVITY 1: SJR State Library’s Borrowing Policies

1. What do you need to show the library staff in order to borrow items from the Library ?
You need an SJR State ID card or a Government Issued Photo ID if you want to access items from the library
2. How many items can you check out if you have one overdue item?
You can check out no books if you have an overdue item.
3. How many books can you borrow at one time?
You can check out as many books as you please.
4. How long is the loan period for books?
You have a 21-day loan period.

5. How are SJR State Library’s books shelved/organized?

They are organized by Library Congress Call Number.
6. How many DVDs can you borrow at one time?
You can borrow 3 DVDs at a time.
7. How long is the loan period for DVDs?
The DVD loan period is 7 days.
8. How long does it take to receive a requested library item from another SJR State campus?
Usually 1-3 business days.
9. How long does it take to receive a requested item from another institution?
The requests arrive in 1-3 days.
10. How are you notified when your requested items have arrived?
You are notified via your Viking Email.

ACTIVITY 2: Finding & Citing a Book
You will be using the Library’s Catalog to find book and then create APA & MLA style
citations of that book. To help with your citations, I am providing two examples. If you need
a citation refresher, please check out the SJR State Library’s Citation Guide

1. Find a book by keyword:

Use the SJR State Library Catalog and search for a print book (Not eBook) using the
keyword Fake News. Provide the following information for your book:

A. Who is the author? James W. Cortada and William Aspray.

B. What is the title? Fake News nation: the long history of lies and misinterpretations in
America.
C. Who is the publisher? Maryland Lanham.
D. What is the year of publication? 2019
E. What is the Library of Congress call number? PN4784.F27 C67 2019

2. Create an APA style citation for your book:

APA Citation Format (Remember to double space & use a hanging indent after the 1 st line.)
APA Book Citation Elements:
Last Name, Initial of First Name, Middle initial if provided. (Year of publication). Title of book. Publisher Name.

APA Example:
Casey, M. J., & Vigna, P. (2018). The truth machine: The blockchain and the future of everything. St. Martin’s Press.

Cortada, J. W.& Aspray, W. (2019). Fake news nation : the long history of lies and misinterpretations in

3. Create an MLA style citation for your book:
