Introduction
to Nutrition
Nutrition is the examination of how
food and drinks influence our bodies,
with a focus on the essential nutrients
required to maintain human health.
It investigates the biochemical and
physiological processes involved in
eating, and how dietary molecules
generate energy or are transformed
into human tissues.
What are nutrients?
Nutrients are substances found in foods that our bodies use to
grow, reproduce and survive. Good nutrition means obtaining
the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right
combinations. There are 6 major nutrients we get from food:

3. Lipids (aka
1. Protein 2. Carbohydrates
Fats)

4. Vitamins 5. Minerals 6. Water

Role of nutrients
Vital for the growth of new tissues, the repair of damaged cells, and the production
of hormones and enzymes. It is required to build strong muscles and a good

immune system. Meat, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), almonds, shellfish, and eggs
are good sources of protein.
Supply the body with a rapid source of energy and the components needed for the
Carbohydrates development of new cells. Pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, cereals, fruit, milk, and
sugar are good sources of carbs.

Provides the body with a source of stored energy and serves as a structural element
of cells as well as a signaling molecule for effective cellular communication. It

They makeup body tissue, regulate bodily functions and are essential for healthy
cellular operation. To maintain good health, consuming food that contains minerals

regions, and helps with body temperature maintenance.
Importance of nutrition
For the body to function properly, grow appropriately, and maintain health, one must consume
enough macronutrients (proteins, carbs, fats, and water) and micronutrients (vitamins and
minerals).

The phrase "you are what you eat" applies to how your body will react to the food it consumes,
either positively or negatively.

Processed, sweet, fatty, and overly salted foods make the body drained and unable to function
properly.

Consuming fresh, natural whole meals fuels the body by supplying it with the elements
needed for energy production, metabolic activity, prevention of micronutrient shortages,
prevention of chronic disease, and promotion of general health and wellbeing.

All bodily cells, tissues, and systems require nourishment for healthy growth and operation from
infancy through age. Growth and development are impeded in the absence of the right nutrition.
Food Pyramid
 It was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and is based on recent studies on food and health.
The Food Guide Pyramid is a new graphic created to
assist individuals to think about eating healthily.
The Pyramid is made to make it easier for people to
get the right nutrients while avoiding too much fat or
sugar.
The three bottom levels of the Food Guide Pyramid
encourage eating foods from the five main food
groups.
These dietary types each offer some of the nutrients
you require, but not all of them.
At the top of the pyramid come sweets, fats, and oils.
These should only be used in tolerance.
Malnutrition is a general term for poor nutrition, which can include
Malnutrition either excessive nutrient ingestion (overnutrition) or inadequate
nutrient consumption (undernutrition).
People who are starved are unable to maintain their normal body
processes, including growth, disease recovery, learning, physical
activity, and, in the case of women, pregnancy and lactation.
Overeating can result in obesity and problems linked to diet (such as
heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer).
