Activity Title: NAMING COMPOUNDS

LEARNING TARGETS: Name some examples of compounds.
REFERENCE:
INTRODUCTION
It is important to know how compounds are named. Naming a chemical formula of a given compound
is called chemical nomenclature. There are two kinds of chemical nomenclatures, the common name
and the systematic chemical name. Synthetic chemical names follow strictly the rules agreed upon
by members of a Commission on the Nomenclature of Organic Chemicals of the International Union
of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
MATERIALS: Symbols, Periodic Table of Elements
PROCEDURE
A. Binary compounds containing two non-metals
Rule: Greek prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms present in a compound or in a
formula. When a common name is asked the prefix mono is commonly used.
Example: N2O4 - dinitrogen trioxide
Answer the following exercises:
Chemical Formula Common Name
1. NO3 Nitrate
2. N2O3 Dinitrogen traxide
3. CO2 Carbon Dioxide
4. PCl3 Phosphorus triochloride
5. PCl5 Phosphorus pentachloride

B. Binary compounds containing metal ions with variable oxidation numbers

Rule: In naming compounds of these metal ions use the stock nomenclature where the oxidation
number is written in Roman numeral following the metallic element.
Example: Cu2O - cuprous oxide – copper (I) oxide

Exercises: ALL WILL BE CROSSED WITH OXYGEN ION

Metallic Elements Chemical Formula Systematic Name or (IUPAC)
Cu+1 CuBr copper (I) bromide
+2
Cu CuO Copper (II) oxide
+4
Pb Pb2O4 Lead (IV) oxide
Fe+2 FeO Iron(II)oxide
+3
Fe Fe2O3 Iron(III)oxide

C. Binary compounds containing metals and non-metals

Rule: To name this compound, first give the name of the metallic element (+) which usually appears
first in the chemical formula, followed by the non-metal (-), with its last syllable changed to –
ide.
Note: No prefix is used before the name of either element.
Example: NaCl – sodium chloride
FORMULAS
-ion
+ion I-1 Br-1 O-2
+1 1 NaI 5 NaBr 9 Na2O
Na
Li+1 2 LiI 6 LiBr 10 Li2O
Ca+2 3 CaI2 7 Cabr2 11 CaO
Al+3 4 AlI3 8 AlBr3 12 Al2O3

Give the names of the given compounds in the table above.

1.sodium iodide 5.sodium bomide 9.sodium oxide
2.lithium iodide 6.lithium bomide 10.lithium oxide
3.calcium iodide 7.calcium bomide 11.calcuim oxide
4.aluminum iodide 8. aluminum bomide 12.aluminum oxide

D. Ternary Compounds
Rule: A positive ion is named first before the negative; then changed the last syllable is changed to
–ate.
Example: NaNO3 – sodium nitrate
Exercises:
Formulas Name
Pb(NO3)2 Lead nitrare
Na2CO3 Sodium carbunate
Li2SO4 Lithium sulfate
KMnO4 Potassium manganite
Mg3(PO4)2 Magnesium phosphate

E. Bases
Rule: The name of the metal is first given followed by the negative radical hydroxide.
Example: Ca(OH)2 – calcium hydroxide
Exercises:
Formulas Name
KOH 1. potassium hydroxide
LiOH 2.lithium hrydoxide
Pb(OH)2 3.lead hrydoxide
Mg(OH)2 4.magnesium hrydoxide
Al(OH)3 5.aluminum hrydoxide

F. Nonoxygen and Oxyacids

Acids can be classified as nonoxyacids and oxyacids.
F.1. In naming nonoxyacids follow the same rules in naming binary compounds.

Formula Prefix Stem Suffix Name

Ex. HCl hydro Chlor -ic hydrochloric acid
1. H2S hydro Sulf -ic 1. hydrochloric
acid
2. HI Hydro iod -ic 2. hydrochloric
acid
3. HBr Hydro brom -ic 3. hydrochloric
acid
4. HF Hydro fluor -ic 4. hydrochloric
acid

F.2. Oxyacids contain different numbers of oxygen and naming these acids depends on the O atom
present.

Formula Prefix Stem Suffix Name

Ex. H2SO4 - sulfur -ic sulfuric acid
1. HBrO4 - bromine -ic 1.bromie acid
2. HBrO3 - bromine -ic 2. bromie acid
3. HBrO2 - bromine -ic 3. bromie acid
4. H2SO4 - sulfer -ic 4.sulfuric acid
5. HNO3 - nitrogen -ic 5.nitric acid
