Year 10 History

World War 2 - Historical Inquiry

Purpose/Background:
This task requires you to investigate and explain two different scenarios in order to understand the experiences of people during
World War Two. You will need to conduct independent research incorporating primary sources. Your analysis should consider the
experiences, conditions and outcomes for people in each of the two scenarios. Through this process, you will develop important
skills in critical thinking, analysis, and evaluation, and gain a deeper understanding of the harsh reality and experiences of those
who lived and fought during World War Two.
Requirements/Instructions:

Part 1 – Folio
The folio involves you documenting your research into the scenario. You will use the information from your folio document to
help construct an extended response based on your chosen scenario.

1. Select one of the topics to research from the list.

2. Investigate each scenario by locating 6 primary sources (3 for each scenario). Primary sources can include photographs,
newsreels, personal accounts, newspaper articles, etc.

3. Analyse each source using the following heading structure. Reference, Relevance, Reliability, Key ideas & Findings.

Part 2 – Extended response (500 – 800 words)


The extended response involves you using evidence from the primary sources to construct a written response on the nature and
experiences of World War Two. This will be done under open-book test conditions during lesson time.
Your extended response must have:

1. Introduction - provide brief background information for both scenarios.

2. Body Paragraphs – provide at least one TEEL body paragraph for each scenario that uses evidence from your primary
sources.

3. Conclusion – summarise the nature and experiences of World War Two.

Steps for Success


 Use evidence from your primary sources, such as direct quotes from written sources or descriptions from visual sources, and
link these to the nature and experiences of the war.
 Follow TEEL structure for your body paragraphs.
