Disney Mothers
Type of activity: reading, speaking
Focus: characters of mothers in entertainment
Level: intermediate+ and up
Time: 45 minutes
Preparation:
– one copy of Student’s Worksheets 1 and 2 per
student
Procedure:
1. Put the students into pairs. Give them one minute
to list as many Disney movies as they can (they
can be cartoons or feature films). When the
students have finished, elicit examples and ask
them to shortly describe the main characters and
the story. Ask various follow-up questions about
the mothers and fathers of the main characters.
2. Tell the students they are going to read about
mother characters in Disney films. Distribute
Student’s Worksheet 1 and let the students work
individually to read the descriptions. Then ask for
their reactions and comments.

3. Next, put the students into groups of three or four
and ask them to discuss the questions at the
bottom of the page. Monitor and help as they do
this, then collect feedback with the whole group,
asking follow-up questions and developing the
discussion.
4. Tell the students that they are going to read some
comments about the characters of mothers in
Disney films from online reviews and articles.
Distribute Student’s Worksheet 2 and read the
excerpts one by one with the students, explaining
vocabulary and asking the students to paraphrase
them to make sure they understand.
5. Assign different groups of three or four and ask
the students to discuss the comments and say
whether they agree with the opinions voiced.
Monitor as they do this. When the students have
finished, collect and give feedback.
