Knowledge and Understanding: (25 marks)

Q.1) Wave in which motion of particles is parallel to the direction of the wave is called longitudinal wave.
[1M]

Q.2) The bouncing of a wave off a barrier is called reflection. [1M]

Q.3) When a wave passes from one medium into another, the and __________ change. [2M]

Q.4) State and explain the diffraction phenomenon. [2M]

 The diffraction is the spreading of wave around any obstacles., it is also defined as the bending of
waves around the corners of an obstacle and through an aperture into the region.

SA-3/MYP-4 /Physics/Criterion A, B, C, D/Feb-2022

Q.5) What will be the wavelength of a radio signal at 110 𝑀𝐻𝑧? [2M]
(given: Speed of light in air/vacuum: 𝟑×𝟏𝟎𝟖 𝒎/𝒔𝟑×𝟏𝟎𝟖 𝒎/𝒔)
Frequency = 110 MHz
110MHZ = 110000000Hz
V = wavelength x Frequency
Wavelength = frequency/ velocity
Wavelength = 3x108/ 110000000
Wavelength = 2.72

Q.6) Give an example of a transverse, mechanical wave. [1M]

 The examples of transverse wave are the ripple effect on the surface of water, light waves and
microwaves, the examples of mechanical waves are the playing slinky waves and water waves.

Q.7) If the angle of incidence is 25° and angle of refraction is 32°, find the refractive index. [2M]

of the media.

 n1Sin θ1 = n2Sin θ2

1 x Sin25 = n2 x Sin32

n2 = 0.79

Q.8)

a) With the ray diagram explain why mirror gives virtual image and not real image. [2M]

Page 2 of 7
SA-3/MYP-4 /Physics/Criterion A, B, C, D/Feb-2022

b)

[3M]

 it is because the light which is bounces off when the coin the starts moving slower, and it takes longer to
escape the water so once all the light starts travelling though air and its high enough to be seen

Q.9) Compare & Contrast light waves and sound waves. (4 points each) [4M]

 Light waves and Sound waves have similarities like both the waves reflects and refracts and As we
move further away the intensity of them deceases as it could travel limited distance.

The differences between Light waves and Sound waves are that light waves doesn’t need a medium to
travel, but sound waves needs a medium to travel because it needs particle to vibrate, light waves can travel
millions of kilometres for example light from sun to earth, but sound can only travel a limited distance
which depends on the energy it has, sound waves can travel very fast in solids, while light waves can travel
fastest in vacuum.

Q.10) Explain, for given three situations below in the picture, how ‘echolocation’ (SONAR principle) is
used to navigate. Include the principle of reflection of waves in the explanation. [5M]

Page 3 of 7
SA-3/MYP-4 /Physics/Criterion A, B, C, D/Feb-2022

 So echolocation is used by the bats in order to hunt in night time as what happens is that the bat will
send some waves and if there is prey it will hit and bounce off and will be received by the bat so it
know where its prey is, for dolphin it used in a similar way to find other fishes for food for the
submarine it is used to locate ships or any oceanic cliffs or ridges which come in there way.

Lab designing: (25 marks)

Task: In the video link given below shows that we can model many real-life scenarios using simple lab
equipment. You have been asked to investigate the relationship between bending of light in reference to the
type of medium used. In this way you can answer the research question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=DBtaoa7Orro

Research question: To investigate effect of salt concentration on refractive index of water where first
medium is vacuum.

Q.11 a) Variables: Select the appropriate independent, dependent and controlled variables. Describe the
variable as per experiment relevant to manipulation of the independent variable with appropriate range,
measurement of the dependent variable, and controlling the controlled variables. (9M)

IV: the concentration of salt and the refractive index

DV: the angle of refraction.

CV: The apparatus

Q.11 b) Use the information in the video with the help of equation of Snell’s law to formulate and explain a
testable hypothesis that could address the research question.

SA-3/MYP-4 /Physics/Criterion A, B, C, D/Feb-2022

 I predict that if we will be adding salt concentration in the water, I thinking I will increase the refractive
index of water as now salt is also dissolved in it which will make it denser. When the light will pass through
air to the water it the light will travel through different medium and eventually its speed will decrease and it
will the light will bend more towards the normal as salt is added in water as the speed of light is maximum
in vacuum

Q.11 c) Justify your hypothesis using scientific law. (2M)

 I think as the light passes through the water where salt is added so I think that the light will be refracting
more because the refractive index of the salt water solution high because of salt.

Q.11 d) Enlist safety measures associated with your experiment. (2M)

 be sure to seal the vacuum chamber properly

Be careful with the glass beaker

Q.12 a) Design the procedure to collect the data. (6M)

. Place a beaker in the vacuum chamber

. pour water not dissolved with salt

.use a powerful laser beam and position it and turn it on at the beaker

.Note down the angle of refraction of light in water and use it to calculate the refractive index of water by
using the Snell’s law

.place a new beaker in the chamber

.pour salt dissolved water in

.add 5% of salt each time you record the refraction

Q.12 b) Suggest how many trials you need to record. Justify your answer. (2M)

Processing and evaluating (22marks)

TASK SPECIFICATIONS:

 Proposed hypothesis is “Increase in salt concentration in water will increase in the refractive index of water”.

 Use the collected data to prove or disprove the proposed hypothesis. (4M)

As the graph shows that increasing the concentration of salt will increase the refractive index
because more salt concentration and it will slow down the speed of light to very low.

 Analyze and present the data as a suitable graph(s) of refractive index vs % of salt concentration. (7M)
(The independent variable should be on the horizontal axis.

Page 5 of 7
SA-3/MYP-4 /Physics/Criterion A, B, C, D/Feb-2022

 Interpretation of data: Analyze and describe your results (data and graph) using scientific reasoning. (5M)

 Comment on the reliability/validity of the data given the strength of correlation supported by your data, and
sources of error. (3M)

I think my hypothesis is valid because all the outcomes signifies that same results as the graph so therefore its
valid because as higher concentration of salt will increase the refractive index and decease the speed of light

 Write down suggestions to improve the experimental errors. (3M)

Adding the salt equally and very should try repeating the experiment as many times as possible in order to get
a accurate results

Collected data for refractive index by varying the salt concentration:

Refractive index of air: 1.00

Salt concentration (%) Refractive index

In water
0% 1.335
5% 1.344
10 % 1.353
15 % 1.365
20 % 1.370
25 % 1.380

Task: Students are expected to write two paragraphs (400-500 words) on Applications of Sound waves.
 Students must use attached information for their referencing.
 You must use your prior knowledge as well.
 You are not allowed to copy paste the information from resource. You must paraphrase the
information.
 Citing the information is must even though you are using support document it does include links and
page number.
 You must use below guiding question and sequence of the information must kept the same as per
guiding questions.

Guiding questions:

1. What is sound wave explain with audible and inaudible range for humans?

2. Why medium is important for sound waves to travel and which medium is best for sound waves to
travel?

3. How the distribution of molecules takes place in sound waves?

4. Daily life applications of sound waves.

5. How sound waves are used in various fields like medicinal, navigation, agricultural, national
security, and industrial purposes?

Sound is a longitudinal wave which travels through vibration of the particles of the medium through
sound waves cannot travel in vacuum because there no particle to vibrate and sound travels the
fastest through solid things because the molecules in solid things are closer together and, therefore, it
can vibrate faster and the audible and inaudible range for humans from 20hz to 20000 hz. The daily
usages of sound wave SONAR, sonar is used to detect any objects by the submarines like oceanic
ridges, cliff, Sonar works by like sending out sound waves and measuring how long it takes for the
echo to return to the receiver Sound waves has many applications in electronics for phones and other
gadget and sound waves are majorly use for communication also used for x-ray in the health field. In
the field of security sonar are used to detected battleships of enemy country and industries sound
waves are used to detect flaws or cuts over machinery parts in Industries. Ultrasound is also used in
Industries to measure thickness of metal.
