For this assignment, you need to submit an individual written report that unpacks key false
ceilings, joinery, windows, doors and allied furniture.

The African Airlines Association intends to put up a five star hotel in Nairobi. The client has
engaged the construction team. The following building elements have been constructed to
completion;
The structural frame comprising of insitu reinforced concrete. The structure has two stairs as
shown on the floor plans. Massive temporary works (scaffolding) have been erected around the
structure to aid in construction of building finishes (plaster, tiles, flooring, paint) all of which are
at an advanced stage.
You are therefore approached by the team to advise on the following:
1. The various options for timber doors for the various door openings. Highlight the
construction of the identified timber doors. Include a methodology to the contractor for (a).
Fixing a door frame onto the door opening (b). Installing a timber door onto the frame. This
information will be used for quality assurance.
2. Analyse the various options for windows on the basis of: materials of window, method of
opening/hanging, and position in the building. Highlight the functional requirements the
client should look out for in procuring the windows. Highlight the construction of a timber
casement window and the methods of fixing glass/glazing both steel and timber casement
windows as part of work methodology to the contractor. List the window and door furniture
the client should consider purchasing for the various windows and doors discussed.
3. Analyse various types of kitchen fitments and wardrobes in light of the materials (types of
boards used), design and construction. Include a methodology to the contractor for
developing a cutting list for the fabrication of the units. Detail a list of carpentry fixings e.g.
cornice, skirting, dado rails, architraves and quadrants and their uses to the building.
4. The client also intends to install ceilings. Analyse the various options for the ceiling finishes
with their uses in each building space. Include a work methodology to the contractor for the
installation of a suspended ceiling.
This assessment will contribute to the achievement of the following Programme
Learning Outcomes:
1.1.1 Identify and interrogate the various types of doors, windows, kitchen fittings,
wardrobes and the concept of interior design.
1.1.2 Apply theory to discussion and analysis of various windows, doors and joinery.
1.1.3 Critically evaluate considerations in the choice of each particular window or door
identified.
1.1.4 Critically reflect upon the workmanship in the installation of the various fittings and
fixtures.
1.1.5 Identify various construction details/drawings that aid in the construction and
installation of the windows, doors, fittings and fixtures
1.1.6 Critically discuss the role of various construction stakeholders in good quality work
with regard to setting out, durability and good workmanship. Pay special attention to an
interior designer who employs the art of shapes, materials, colour, arrangement of objects,
and surface texture in the design of the interior of the building spaces.
