ANSYS HFSS

AIM:

To design and simulate a coaxial waveguide using HFSS software and analyze the electric
and magnetic field distributions.

SOFTWARE REQUIRED:

ANSYS Electronics desktop v.R2023

THEORY:

Coaxial waveguide is the most common two‐conductor transmission system. Dielectric

filling in most microwave applications is polyethylene or Teflon. Coaxial waveguide is used
to carry high-frequency electrical signals with low losses. The wave propagates primarily in
the transverse electric magnetic (TEM) mode, which means that the electric and magnetic fields
are both perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, above a certain cutoff
frequency, transverse electric (TE) or transverse magnetic (TM) modes can also propagate, as
they do in a hollow waveguide. Its applications include feedlines connecting radio transmitters
and receivers to their antennas.

OUTER CONDUCTOR OF COAXIAL WAVEGUIDE:

PROCEDURE:

• Open HFSS Electronic desktop

• In project click insert HFSS design

Creation of inner conductor:

• Go to draw option- select cylinder

• Click and drag the box in HFSS layout window
• To assign properties-right click on create cylinder (available in left side of the
window)
• Enter Radius = 5 mm, Height =100 mm
• Position (0,0,0) and then click ok
• After the creation of substrate cylinder1 - click ctrl+D to fit window
• Rename it into inner_conductor

Creation of outer conductor:

• Copy and paste inner_conductor

• Rename it into outer_conductor -> To assign properties-right click on create cylinder
• Enter Radius = 18.56 mm, Height =100 mm and Position (0,0,0) -> click ok
• Right click on outer_conductor -> click assign material -> add material -> enter 2.5 as
permittivity ->click ok
• Click ctrl and select outer_conductor and inner_conductor –> right click -> edit ->
Boolean –> Subtract
• Select outer surface of outer_conductor -> right click on it - go to assign boundary ->
perfect E
• To check the assignment of boundaries - click boundaries (available under project
manager)
