[MUSIC] So, so far we've been talking about all

the things we get wrong when it comes to happiness, and

why we get those things wrong. And now we're at a really important
transition in the course because we're going to start focusing on the kinds
of things that really do make us happy, the stuff that really does work. There are
often things that our
mind doesn't necessarily think of. They're not the things we
expect to make us happier, but they're the things that really work. But to do that,
we kind of need a bit of a framework for how to think about this question. because
this problem of the kinds
of things that do make us happy is really big. And so the framework I like to use
to
think about this question comes from cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT. You've
probably heard this acronym before. There's a whole form of therapy that's
kind of built on this idea that we can think about our minds in certain ways. And
in fact, we can think about our minds
as having certain kinds of thoughts. We can think about what we think. We can think
about what we feel, what our
bodies and what our emotions are doing, and we can think about how we act,
how we behave. And the whole principle of CBT is
that we can use each of these and intervene on each of these things,
our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviors to behave in ways that are
better, to kind of use better strategies. And this is what we're going to use
when we're thinking about happiness. We're going to use this so called
cognitive triad, behavior, thoughts, and feelings. And when we think about
what makes us happy, we're going to go through each of these,
starting with behaviors. What are behaviors we can
use to make us happier?
