Unit 9 Measures

Dear Parent or Guardian

In this unit, your child will begin to learn about measurement. They will compare lengths and
weights by direct comparison and begin to use what are called non-standard units. This is
what we call measuring by how many hands wide a table is or how many cubes will balance
something in a balance scale. (Standard units are units such as metres, kilograms and litres.)
We will be using comparative language, for example words like longer, shorter, heavier,
lighter and so on. If you use this vocabulary at home, it would be very helpful.
We will be measuring many different objects and most of the activity will be practical. You
can support this at home by carrying out lots of measuring activities at home. For now,
compare objects to see which is the longest, which is the heaviest and so on.
