Lesson 9

Characterization and Dramatic Structure

Creating Characters
You have selected a cultural practice. This is the idea or
story of your play. All plays need characters. When
creating a play you need to think about all the aspects of a
character. You need to consider the physical, vocal,
emotional and intellectual parts of the character.

Dramatic Structure
Dramatic structure involves the overall framework used to organize the dramatic
action. Most plays are structured into acts that can be further divided into scenes.

Exposition: This provides information to

the audience to assist them in following the main storyline of the play. It
establishes the characters, the time, and the place.

Point of attack: This is the moment of the play where the main action of the plot
begins. The main complication/problem/issue is introduced which leads to the
rising action of the play.

Rising action: The action of the play rises. Situations of increasing intensity and
anticipation are created. These scenes make up the body of the play and usually
create a sense of continuous dramatic tension in the audience.
The climax/crisis: This is the highest level of dramatic intensity. All the combined
actions of the play generally lead up to this moment.

Resolution: The resolution is the moment of the play in which the issues/conflicts
are resolved.
