Materials and Tools

Lesson 1: Prepare Electrical
Materials and Tools
This Lesson covers the common electrical tools and materials
along with their purpose or function, illustrations are provided to help you
familiarize yourself with them. Always observe safety in handling or
manipulating any tools to ensure a safe workplace and avoid accidents.

The following are the most common electrical tools and devices
that you may encounter in the electrical installation and maintenance
exploratory courses.
ELECTRICAL TOOLS
1. SCREWDRIVERS – Tools made of steel and classified
according to its tip and used to loosen or tighten screws.

A. STANDARD SCREWDRIVER ILLUSTRATION

Also known as flathead


screwdriver and has a tip that
resembles a negative (-) sign
and used to drive screws with a
single slot head
B. PHILIPS SCREWDRIVER ILLUSTRATION

Also known as crossed-tip


screwdriver or positive (+) head
screwdriver and used to drive
screws with cross slot heads.
C. STUBBY SCREWDRIVER ILLUSTRATION

Either standard or philips


tip but the distinguishing part is
the short handle and shank used
for tight spaces
2. CLAW HAMMER
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

It is the most commonly


used hammer with a flat face
used for pounding or driving
nails and a claw on the other
end used for pulling out nails.
3. PLIERS – Tools made of metal with rubber insulated
handles used for holding, gripping and cutting wires.

A. COMBINATION PLIERS ILLUSTRATION

Also known as lineman’s


pliers and used for holding,
gripping and cutting wires
B. LONG NOSE PLIERS ILLUSTRATION

Used for holding, gripping


and cutting fine wires with an
elongated end which is used to
reach tight spaces or small
openings, it can also make
terminal loops for wires
C. DIAGONAL CUTTING PLIERS ILLUSTRATION

This type of plier is


specifically used for cutting
wires.
4. WIRE STRIPPER
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

Used for removing wire


insulation of medium wire sizes
(#10 - #16 AWG)
5. HACKSAW
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

Primarily used to cut


electrical conduits
ELECTRICAL
MATERIALS
1. CONVENIENCE OUTLET
DESCRIPTION

A device which serves as source of electrical energy for


electrical appliances, it is basically a device with slots where
an appliance plug is inserted. There are two common types of
convenience outlet such as:
A. FLUSH TYPE ILLUSTRATION

These are convenience


outlets that are embedded in the
wall and the wirings are not
exposed
B. SURFACE TYPE ILLUSTRATION

A type of convenience
outlet that is installed at the
surface of the wall and the
wirings are exposed, a typical
example are those used in
common extension cords
2. MALE PLUG
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

A device with metal


prongs attached at the end of
the cord of electrical appliances
which is inserted to the slot of
the convenience outlet.
3. LAMP HOLDERS – Also known as sockets, it is where the bulb
or lamp is inserted/secured and supplies electrical energy to
energize the bulb
A. FLUSH TYPE ILLUSTRATION

A type of lamp holder


wherein the wirings are not
exposed or embedded in the
ceiling
B. SURFACE TYPE ILLUSTRATION

A type of lamp holder


wherein the wiring connections
are exposed to and from the
device
4. SWITCH – A device that connects and disconnects the
flow of electric current in a circuit.

A. FLUSH TYPE ILLUSTRATION

A type of switch wherein


the wirings are not exposed or
embedded in the wall
B . SURFACE TYPE ILLUSTRATION

A type of switch wherein


the wirings are exposed or
visible in a wall or surface
5. OVERCURRENT PROTECTIVE DEVICES- used to protect the
electrical circuit from dangerous effects of overload or short circuit

A. FUSE ILLUSTRATION

A disposable overcurrent
protective device with a strip of
wire that melts and cuts the
flow of current in a circuit in
case of overcurrent or short
circuit
B. CIRCUIT BREAKER ILLUSTRATION

An overcurrent protective
device which automatically
blows and cuts (trip) the current
when short circuit or overload
occurs, once the fault is
corrected, the circuit breaker
may be turned and reuse
6. ELECTRICAL BOXES- These may be made of metal or
plastic PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

A. JUNCTION BOX ILLUSTRATION


An octagonal shaped
electrical material where the
connections or joints of wires
are being done. It also where
the flush type lamp holder is
attached.
B. UTILITY BOX ILLUSTRATION

A rectangular shaped
electrical box where flushed
type convenience outlets and
flushed type switches are
attached or installed
7. FLAT CORD
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

A duplex stranded wire


commonly used in extension
cord assembly and appliance
cords, it may also be used for
temporary wiring installation
8. ELECTRICAL WIRES
DESCRIPTION

Also known as electrical conductors made of copper or


aluminum which are used in house wiring installations. Its size
varies depending on its application or job specification

There are two types of wires commonly used such as Stranded


Wire and Solid Wire.
A. STRANDED WIRE ILLUSTRATION

Made of multiple strands


joined together to make a single
wire.
B. SOLID WIRE ILLUSTRATION

Made of single strand of


copper or aluminum
9. ELECTRICAL CONDUITS
DESCRIPTION

Also known as electrical pipes that serves as passage and


protection of the wires. Depending on the materials used, There are
different kinds of electrical conduits or pipes:
A. RIGID METALLIC CONDUIT (RMC) ILLUSTRATION

A thick-walled metal
tubing which can be threaded.
B. ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING (EMT) ILLUSTRATION

A thin-walled metal
tubing which is less costly and
lighter than RMC’s
C. FLEXIBLE METALLIC CONDUIT (FMC) ILLUSTRATION

A flexible tubing made of


thin metal
D. RIGID NON METALLIC CONDUIT ILLUSTRATION

Also known as PVC or


Polyvinyl Chloride which is
commonly available in orange
color
E. FLEXIBLE NON METALLIC CONDUIT ILLUSTRATION

Also known as Corrugated


Plastic Conduit (CPC) which is
commonly available in orange
color.
10. CLAMPS
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

Electrical materials used


to hold and anchor electrical
conduits in place which may be
made of metal or plastic
11. CONNECTORS
DESCRIPTION ILLUSTRATION

Also known as adaptors


are electrical materials used to
connect or attach electrical
conduits to electrical boxes,
may either be made of metal or
plastic
Lesson 2: Request Electrical
Supplies, Materials and Tools
Different Forms Used in Electrical Installation and Maintenance
Proper documentation is an important part of any profession,
to do so, different forms are used depending on the task to be
performed, the correctness of the entry of different forms is
necessary to monitor, acquire, or borrow right , complete and
accurate number of materials and tools needed in a specific
electrical job or provide job specifications.
1. PURCHASE REQUISITION FORM
A document generated by a
user, department, or storeroom-
personnel to notify the purchasing
department items needed to order
which also indicates the quantity,
unity of measure, description, cost
and may also include other
specifications as needed. Also
known as purchase request or
requisition
2. INVENTORY FORM
Is a proper and systematic
recording of the tools, materials,
supplies and equipment in an
enterprise which may also include
their condition, location, and/or
status. Inventories consist of raw
materials, work-in-progress
goods, and finished goods that are
considered to be the portion of a
business’s assets that are ready or
ready for sale or are disposed of
3. JOB ORDER FORM/ WORK ORDER FORM

Is a written instruction to
perform a work according to
specified requirements, within
specified timeframe and cost
estimates
4. BORROWER’S FORM
Is a form used to request for
tools and equipment needed for a
particular job. It indicates the
department that the borrower is
connected to, the date borrowed,
the job needed to be done, the
person who approved the request,
the date returned, and the
condition of the tools and
equipment borrowed
